I haven’t bought the subscription yet, but is there any advantages of running Gaia on an iPad vs iPhone and CarPlay? I have a large display for CarPlay, but are some of the features limited when running on CarPlay?

I didn’t have luck with any of the advanced Gaia features using CarPlay.

It’s great on the iPad, though.

I've got it running on an old iPad, note that if your iPad is a WiFi module you'll need to have an external GPS source, I have one from BadElf. And I can say the Hondo Garage mount is wicked nice.

Gaia is very limited on CarPlay. You can pick a pre-determined route (that you've generated on your phone/computer) and you can see your map as you travel along (if you've downloaded the map area prior to losing cell signal). Other than that, there's not much more you can do on CarPlay. I found it quite disappointing, though I'm not sure who to blame as I know Apple doesn't allow for a lot of functionality on CarPlay given that driving safety is a concern. Still, I think Gaia could have done a much better job. It's pretty featureless.

I am one of the few people that actually liked the Entune head unit but I ended up upgrading to a Pioneer unit for the larger screen and ability to use CarPlay. One of the factors that swayed me was the ability to use Gaia on CarPlay but it is so crappy that I think I'm going to end up getting an iPad mini anyway.

Just to echo what others are saying... it’s barely usable on CarPlay. I still use my iPhone or iPad.

Okay, it sounds like I need to get an ipad mini. I have a 10 inch floating screen on my head unit, so it does blow that it is not more usable.

I don’t think you don’t need a subscription to try the CarPlay. Try it out for yourself.

If it's anything like what I experienced trying to get my phone's apps to run on my '17 4Runner, it's better to just run the ipad.

IF you can get your phone's app to display on the truck screen at all, the functionality is extremely limited.

Essentially, it was pointless. Maybe it's gotten better than what was available with my '17 4Runner, but that doesn't really seem to be the case, at least with Gaia...

Have you see that Gaia with its newest update now has a new “Map Overlay” - “Public Tracks”. If I understand this correctly, if you put your recorded tracks to public it should be able to be seen by others.
I.E: I run the pony express and record it, then anyone should be able to follow my tracks.

My biggest complaints about GAIA via Carplay is that the location icon is simply way too massive. I also find the 'top = forward' view (vs top = north) worthless with the position icon stuck in the center of the map.
