I'm at around 2800 km now and it feels pretty smooth for normal driving. On the odd time I'm lazy and let the clutch out too quick it will buck though so the clutch definitely bites.

It's been a really noisy clutch while breaking in. It's much better now but still usually makes some noise when starting in first or reverse. I've gotten a lot of funny looks during the first while due to the howling and sometimes bucking truck.

Reverse requires a lot of slipping the clutch and the truck likes to lightly shudder and shake. As you already know the reverse gear is better suited to Jason Bourne car chase maneuvers than actually backing up to park.

 

In other news I've had a Bussman RTMR that I bought off someone who built it but never used it so I scored it cheap. Bought a bracket for a 4runner, some ground buss bars and a breaker and put some of it together and completed the grounding. Will have to make a bracket to mount my bracket lol.

Plan is to wire my coolant pump through this and maybe power some of my gauges to clean up the five or six fuse taps I have in the cab. It has both fuses and relays to work with.





I'll eventually need some switches to wire in for the relays. Also want to wire a switch to disconnect the abs for full nanny disable.

 

And in other, other news I'm still researching about installing a true trac and am fairly confident I can do the gear backlash. Only real issue will be pressing new bearings in and possibly the bearing removal but I could take the parts to a shop for that.

By reading what I can find on their clutches; I’m actually considering the 2+ version of this clutch. Just to keep it more civil. I emailed them this afternoon and explained what I was looking for. Haven’t heard back yet tho.

Did you buy yours off their site or someplace else, like Summit?

 

I bought through summit cause the Spec website seemed sucky and I didn't feel like phoning lol. The 3+ is fairly civil now but it was a rowdy break in.

I was on the fence with the 2+. A lot of info out there states it holds up to more than admirable levels of torque and lasts longer than the 3+. I just liked the idea of extra overhead for an "I'm dreaming but maybe someday" built motor.

I don't think you could go wrong with the 2+.

 

And my clutch master hydro bearing has shit the bed. Most of the clutch fluid under truck with under 1900 miles. Have to try to get it around the block and into my garage.

Haven't tried to contact them and probably not gonna bother with the way they seem to handle things.

Getting rid of that system. Shit reliability

That is truly bad. It sucks that, as far as I'm aware, there isn't competition for that release bearing. I have the URD one and it's easy to swap bearings because it's just an adapter to a mustang tob.

So is the plan to go back to a standard bearing?

Not sure plans but thinking PDM sleeve with a mounting bracket welded on so it's solid cause the idea of set screws holding it in irks me (first time I think I've ever used that word). Then back to stock slave cylinder and fulcrum.

 

Don’t let the set screws bother you. They work just fine. There’s no big loads there. They just keep that sleeve from going anywhere. That whole PDM setup worked fine for me. I only removed it to try out the CM hydro bearing. What a mistake that turned out to be.

 

I've heard of quills cracking from over tightening those screws. Also, they seem to have a reputation for the squeak coming back after a time and I figured the set screws might allow a little bit of play that shouldn't be there.

How was removing the sleeve when you did the Clutchmasters thing?

 

Overtighten anything and you’re gonna have problems. Some people just shouldn’t be wrenching.

The set screws are a non-issue. Do it right and it’s right. No worries. The sleeve is machined quite well and fits the quill plenty snug. There’s no extra wiggle room to be had. Which, btw, is likely why you’re asking me how hard it was to remove. In my case, it came off with just a bit of twisting by hand.

 

I see what you mean about the spec 3+ clutch making a racket. It can be downright startling. Can feel it in the pedal big time.

 

I was hoping mine was a unique case and it would be better for you. I never read of it being noisy in the majority of other vehicle applications. Mine did quieten down a ton but that's after around 2800 km.

Tacoma turnaround 2021 is a go! Bled the clutch and it held and felt fine for driving through the alley and into the garage. Regardless it's a ticking time bomb and the cold (-20 degC) made it dump the whole reservoir when I was warming the truck up the day it shit the bed.

So far pretty slowly lol. Only put a handful of hours in on the weekend though. Was also waiting for and just received the PDM sleeve today and am started on a true track install so I figured I'd use the trans jack to make removing the third member easier. Should finish this up and possible drop the trans this weekend as it's mostly ready to go.

I'm probably just going back to stock for now as I don't want to gamble on another hydro bearing at the moment. I'm kind of thinking Canadian winter sped up its failure and the external slave is easier to deal with if it craps out.

It sure did feel nice while it worked though.

Crash course for what was involved for those interested.

Took the old diff out and measured backlash on the old carrier and checked pinion backlash (didn't replace that bearing as it's more involved). Disassembled everything. Swapped the ring gear and installed new carrier bearings (freeze truetrac and heat up the bearings and they slip right on). Checked backlash and everything stayed very close to prior tolerances. Gear marking compound showed good contact meshing. Pinion stayed the same. Fill with non synthetic gear oil as Truetrac's work better with it.

Had to use a crowbar to remove the spacer for the Clutchmaster bearing. Scratched the quill a little in the process but there was literally no way to get it off otherwise.

PDM sleeve installed on the quill and am debating the possibilities of putting a remote grease port into the bearing.

 

Clearly that pos was leaking for quite some time.
