What's the friction ring do on the impact wrenches?

 

My guess, keeps it from free spinning?

I always assumed it kept the socket on the.. chuck (or whatever its called)

You're referring to the hog-ring anvil, vice the detent ball anvil? Two different styles of socket-locker-onner. I prefer the hog-ring anvil because I find it holds the socket more firmly, and doesn't rely on you lining up the socket correctly so the dimple meets the detent (some sockets, only have a dimple on one interior face).

I follow now with the other responses, I've always called it a hog ring. Never heard it called a friction ring. It simply keeps your socket on.

I only need/want one for occasional use. I think the M12 would be fine.

that things perfect. I have one of them as well as the 1/2 high torque m18 and 99% of the time I use the 3/8” stubby. It’s also the impact I take with me wheeling. I would recommend having at least a 3.0ah battery for it. I like the 6.0’s

 

I have both an M12 stubby, and the M18 high-torque 1/2"; the M12 does 99% of what I need and is more than capable of breaking lug-nuts off any passenger vehicle. The high-torque I've used on heavy equipment and it will break track-pad bolts on dozers & excavators with little effort.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I have more M12 batteries (2.0, 3.0 and 6.0) than M18 (those are the big ones for my table saw and miter saw). That's why the M12 makes more sense for me and my planned use.

Keeps the socket attached to the anvil. I generally prefer the ring to the detent.
