I'm having trouble counting the gear shifts, it shifts very smooth I can barely feel it past the 2nd shift.

OP, you need to jack the truck up and see what gears are in it.
Turn the wheel and see how many times the drive shaft turns.

Left is what STOCK should be . Right is what 5.29 would be.

    Shift it yourself manually.
You should be able to see the RPM drop too

OK thank you very much for that gear chart. From what I'm seeing my mph is very close to the 75mph in 4th gear pushing 3106 rpm's. Actually mine appears to be doing a little more but that could be calibration. I apologize for the burry photo. I'm just shy 75mph and right around 3100 maybe a little more.

I assume a 5.29 is an after market gear? Geez a 5.29 seems to be a pretty low gear to me.

Yes, aftermarket. I wouldn't think any modern day passenger vehicle with anything near that low. All mfg's try to go as far as possible, in the other direction, due to govt. mandated mpg. regulations

Oh boy! I want this for everyday driving on the interstate. I think I'm eventually going to have it re-geared. Does anyone know what the stock gear for a 2012 4 cylinder was? I thought I read either a 3.73 or 4.10. Personally I think 4.10 would be perfect as I wouldn't mind going up one size in tire. What is a 5.29 doing for my gas mileage, I'm guessing it's killing it?

I'm sure someone will offer to trade diffs with ya. I would but 5.29 is just a little to steep for me.

I don't know how the Tacoma auto shifter selector works, but if it works like my wife's auto Yaris, when the lever is in the "3-D area", if the lever is to the left the trannie is in 3rd gear, but if the lever is to the right, it will shift to 3rd and then to overdrive (4th).

I have to climb a fairly steep mountain 5 days a week. When I re-gear can anyone recommend a gear ratio from experience climbing at highway speeds without screaming rpm's?

Has anyone had a re-gear at a toyota dealership, is this something they do and do well?

I'm wondering if a larger/31" tire will help give me a little more top end speed and drop the rpm's a little bit...? Your thoughts

OP, if you can get a picture of the sticker on the inside edge of the drivers door frame.
We can tell you what it came with from the factory. I’m pretty sure it came with 4.10
It’s the same sticker that has the vin# on it. We don’t need the vin#, just the axle code.
So feel free to blur the vin out it if makes you feel better.

Something just doesn't seem right. I've never heard of a truck, that looks as nice & orig. as the one in your picture having anything near 5.29 gears. Those gears are usually on big old rough trucks with 35" + tires & a 6" to 8" lift & dents & scratches everywhere from Wheel'in in the woods & rock crawling or a construction sites. Not to say it's never been done but sure is very unlikely. You can't tell how many times your trans. is shifting. Are there friends or neighbors, maybe a little more mechanically inclined, near that can drive it a see how many times it shifts? Maybe another thing you may try, put shifter up in "3" & keep it to the left (driver) side of the slot. Get up to appx 50 mph & while "holding throttle steady", push the shifter to the right (passenger) side of the slot to "D". In a few seconds the trans should shift & the rpm. should drop appx 600 rpm., then a few more second the torque converter should lock & it will drop appx 300 more rpm. Will be a little harder to feel the torque converter lock than the trans shift. Just my opinion, "NEVER", "NEVER" go to a stealership after the warranty runs out.

Yep, I was reading about the door sticker and code to determine the gear ratio. Also I was watching some youtube videos on how to mark the pinion and the tire and turn the pinion counting the revolutions to determine what gear ration a vehicle currently has. I'm going to get the sticker information and get under my vehicle and do the pinion/wheel method. I'm still getting over covid, it damn near killed me, give me a couple days and I'll have some definite facts. Thank you everyone for all the help. This is my first taco I hope it turns out to be a good one.

I think it's the bottom line of the sticker there should be ..A/TM A02A... next #'s will be, like 340F meaning a 4 spd. auto. OD transmission

The stock gear ratio is 4.10 for the reg cab 4x4 with automatic. I tried marking the driveshaft and rotating the tires to double check mine and that really doesn't work as well as it should. It sounds like you need someone with a scanner or computer to hook up while you are driving to verify it is really getting into OD. It sounds like it's staying in 3rd gear for some reason. Your mph/rpm numbers match up with a 1:1 final ratio which says it's not getting into OD. But it also depends on how you're driving, if you keep the pedal mashed to run it up to 70 mph then it will hold 3rd gear but it should eventually shift into OD if it's all working properly. Did you but the truck from a dealer? If so, I would go back and make them figure it out.

I figured I lost enough sleep over this and decided to take a drive to a Toyota dealer the other day. A technician went for a ride with me and figured it out right away. It's just like you guys said, I was in 3rd gear. It drives smooth as silk now, the rpms are perfect right where they should be the tech said. (gear ratio is 3.58) When I was bringing the gear shifter down I was putting it into 3rd gear every time, I had no idea the little 1/4 of an inch left to right slot was another gear (D) just like you guys told me. I don't know why I wasn't see it and don't I feel like a dope! I should change my name to dopey225. In all my years of driving I've never had a problem shifting a vehicle, going back to 3 on the tree. I know this won't hold much weight but I can't see a plate of food in front of my face without my coke bottle glasses. Trying to listen for the gear shifting, who was I kidding? I can't hear myself fart anymore. I was very worried over this, my car of 11 yrs just had the transmission go out, that's why I bought this vehicle and here I thought I just bought a vehicle with a bad transmission. I can't thank everyone enough for all of your help and putting up with me, I really appreciate it.
