FWIW. There is a "Sticky" in the Towing Forum titled, "The Tacoma Towing Bible" that is a good reference.

Allow me to clarify some to the common abbreviations used to determine towing numbers.

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This applies to a single vehicle (truck or trailer) as the maximum weight.
UVW = Unloaded Vehicle Weight. This applies to a single vehicle (truck or trailer) as the unloaded (empty) weight. This may or may not include a full fuel tank and driver. Need to check the fine print on the spec sheet.
CC = Cargo Capacity. This is the weight of cargo in truck or trailer. This can be determined by subtracting UVW from GVWR. CC=GVWR-UVW
    TW = Tongue weight.
GCVWR = Gross COMBINED Vehicle Weight Rating. This is the maximum weight of the rig, truck+trailer+cargo.
    CCC = COMBINED Cargo Capacity.

    Common errors in calculations:
Tongue weight (TW) is considered as CARGO in the truck.
Modifications typically add weight to the UVW of the truck without increasing GVWR, thereby reducing the CC.
Cargo is people, pets, add-ons, modifications, tongue weight, anything in the bed. Tires and wheels apply to cargo.

    Limits:
GCVWR is a limit for the tow vehicle's ability to control the load and trailer based on industry standards, such as SAE, FVMSS.
GVWR is a limit for the truck or trailer.
TW is a limit for the the truck or trailer.

    Comments:
Many times the GCVWR is less than the GVWR truck + GVWR trailer.
The most effective way to determine the UVW of the truck is the weigh it at a CAT scale. Do the math to determine CC of the truck.
The TW of the trailer can be measured with common household items. A fulcrum, 5' long 2x4, bathroom scale. Set the 2x4 on the fulcrum and bathroom scale. Place the trailer tongue (ball hitch) on the 2x4 between the fulcrum and scale located 1' away from the fulcrum. This set up will allow the scale to indicate 1/5 (20%) of the TW. Multiply by 5 to determine the TW. Don't forget to have the battery and full propane tank(s) mounted.
Avoid (if possible) hauling potable, grey or black water. Water sucks up alot of CC (1 gallon weighs 8.3 lbs). Its heavy and is typically available as campsite hook-ups or at fill stations. Be sure to dump the black, grey water at the dump stations.
Avoid (if possible) hauling firewood. Can be purchased at the camp in bundles or found in the woods.

Hope this helps clarify a few abbreviations.

Sure. I use the simple method.

    • White door sticker: 1200 pounds payload, all occupants and cargo. Some people claim that this number does not include a 150 pound driver, but thats not what the sticker says, so i can't assume.
    • Yellow door sticker: -68 pound correction.
So my max payload is 1132 pounds.

Now to start adding up, and it adds up fast.
    • People: ~400 pounds, overestimated most days. :anonymous:
    • Dogs: 150 pounds from three fatass dogs.
    • Trailer: a hair over 430 pounds tongue weight, measured by bathroom scale. The whole trailer might only be 3000-ish pounds, but you would be surprised by what a tongue mount battery and propane cylinder can do.
    • Vehicle Mods: about 50 pounds total, The truck is mostly stock, with my softopper and bed mat as my two heaviest mods.
Subtotal passengers, dogs and trailer: 1030 pounds. This leaves me a scant 100 pounds for luggage.

    • Cooler and groceries: ~60 ish pounds.
    • Luggage that wasnt stowed in trailer: ~20 ish.
    • Generator - or - firewood -or- kayak, pick only one: 85 pounds.

So right now, even though I'm well within limits of the vehicle GCWR, I'm actually 65 pounds over GVWR.

    coming soon!
How can anyone stay under GVWR when they start throwing bumbers, rocksliders, armor, winches, bigger tires and such on their vehicles?

You can if you're careful and don't plan to carry a lot else. My 2nd gen with front and rear bumpers, skid plates, sliders, GFC and a few other things was about 250lbs under GVWR verified on a scale. It's definitely easy to overload these trucks and not realize it if you're not careful with mods.

People who do mods, if they have interest, will pay attention to the weight of removed components and the weight of the added component.

Example: Remove a 100 lb bumper, add a 150 lb bumper. Results in a 50 lb increase in Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) and a corresponding decrease in Cargo Capacity (CC).

    Simple math.
