I have a 2017 DCSB auto, This morning I went out to start the truck and it started super ruff, felt almost like it was mis-firing, then about 3 seconds later it died. I tried starting again and the starter was cranking the engine but it was not starting. I hooked up the jumper cables to my wife's car, and the truck was able to start but was still running ruff, then after about 30 seconds smoothed out and ran like normal. I took my battery out and used my wife's car to get it tested at o'reilly, they said it was fine, tested 550 out of the rated 582 Amps. I took it back home and cleaned off the terminals, there was a fair amount of corrosion, but not enough that i would think it would cause a problem. I reinstalled it into my truck and now it starts and runs fine just like it normally does. I took it into oreilly to have them test the alternator and they said it was fine also. Just as a side note, it was around 35 degrees Fahrenheit, but its started in colder temps with out issue within the last week. Oh and it didn't have a CEL at all during the whole process. I checked and oil is on the low side, still within the lines on the dip stick, but not nearly low enough to cause a problem. This is the first time it has ever done this in the 4 years since I bought it brand new.

My first thought was it might be the crank position sensor going bad but it was supposedly replaced by the dealership a few years ago, and i would think it would be an all or nothing thing, and not just start working like normal.

We are planning on pulling the camper with my truck this weekend to a destination that is 3+ hours away, and I am a little concerned about breaking down out in the middle of the highway somewhere.

Its 3/4 full and been running on that same tank for over a week without issues, I also had it out doing errands around town both saturday and sunday, and no hint of an issue.

I'd run the gas low and fill up at a busy station that uses a lot of gas so you could rule that out.

Tell me how you’re getting more than a week out of only a 1/4 tank of gas. I must know

I am new to Toyota, but with my fords, sometimes getting the codes read can help, not all codes will trigger the check engine light (on fords at least), but may be stored in the memory if you haven't driven too far . I also tend to use the shrug and move on method for one-off weird engine behavior. I had to get used to the many personalities of the Taco engine when I first bought it, however this sounds like it was a little more significant than the occasion sewing machine imitation the Taco does.

Actually I was thinking this might be the case.

Anyone have any experience with CPS related symptoms? Does my case sound like it might be related?

I second the bad gas. This happened in our 4Runner and went away. The temps are right for condensation to form inside the tank as well. While sitting, it'll settle to the bottom and when it gets to the intake, you'll get what you experienced. Products like Heet can help mitigate this by dissipating the water in the tank so the engine doesn't even notice it there (depending on how much water, of course).

Just a thought, but if you are taking lots of short trips then the battery never gets fully recharged by the alternator. Over time it will eventually just not have enough amps to start. I put a charger on my battery every couple of months because of this (unless I go on a long drive). If your drive is 3 miles each way without traffic, you need a battery tender. Just use it once a month or so and you should be fine.

Edit - You need about a 10-15 minute drive after a start to get the battery back to where it began. It will take much longer if you take short trips to get the battery back to full charge, so using a charger every month takes care of it.

Might be fuel pump. I did receive the first recall notice. Waiting for the second one. Also have the 2017.

Hmmmm, this is interesting, the gas station I most recently filled up at is one of the crappier ones, and probably less used ones in the area. I almost always refill at the same gas station (closest one by my house) which sees alot more customer traffic, except this last time.

This thought did cross my mind when I first moved from Houston TX to the little college town I live in now. But in the 5 years I have lived here, its never been an issue. Also when I got the battery tested they said it was nearly fully charged.

I just checked my vin and my truck does not have any open recalls ATM. Just out of curiosity do you know if it is for the high or low pressure fuel pump?
