Just throwing this out there had my 2021 taco in the shop over the weekend for it’s first service which as many may know is a tire rotation and check over. While waiting the service writer came to me and asked if i had ever had the wheels off my truck, I said no? It only has 4100 on it. It’s leased so no need to anyways... he hands me a lug nut and says that this came off hard and that it’s stripped the stud also. Then he starts telling me that it’s not a warranty issue that he thinks it was installed at the factory wrong and that I would have to call Toyota and file a claim in order to get it repaired or I would have to pay out of pocket so they left it off and sent me home. I called and they are investigating this matter! But in the meantime I started to think if a lug nut is stripped at the factory and they send it all the way home to the rim it’s either gonna snap coming off or the whole thread is gonna be stripped not just the last 3-4 threads! I’ve been around the automotive industry for about 30yrs either working on cars or small engines and towing! And I’ve seen stripped lugs before and crap happens, but this is what i think whom ever worked on my truck crossed the lug back idk i want to hear what y’all think i may take this up with the dealerships owner

Some tech gave it a few too many ugga duggas and now you gotta deal with it?

Bet the tech damaged it and doesn't want to own up to it. I assume he took the impact to it full throttle. I break lugs loose by hand first. Same for install. Final torque done by hand.

I WOULD take this up with the dealership's owner...There should be no issue here: As you've not touched the truck and it's brand new it should have been fixed on the spot. Call Corporate and make a Case. Then find a new dealer. Hopefully there's another one not too far away. Where I used to live in SoCA there were 3 dealers within 10 miles of each other.
Unfortunate situation for you, that's for sure.
    Hope it's quickly resolved.

Regardless of manufacturer or dealer, stuff happens, your dealer should have just fixed it. I would think a call to the dealer general manager should get you quickly taken care of if they want to continue your business.

I replaced one on my sons car just a couple of months ago, I think it cost me around $5 retail and 15 minutes. I would hate to lose a customer over something so trivial.

There’s a slight possibility that the threads in the lug nut were not “right” towards the back of the lug?
And maybe, just maybe, those last few threads in the lug nut caused the issue. But I don’t know?
I’d probably want to see the inside of the lug nut and the stud.

If the first few thread on BOTH are messes up, I’d be suspicious for sure.

This has happened twice on my wife's Subaru Forester over the last 6 years and the dealer just swapped it all out for us. Both times, no problem. Your dealer is risking losing a customer over a minor issue that was very likely their fault. Sorry.

Dealer needs to address this under warranty. They sent you home with a potential safety issue.

Read your lease about repairs. There maybe a clause about such problems, leading to a lever to either break the lease (dealer end) or repair under warranty. No matter if dealer cause or factory cause.

If the dealer is being obstinate, then run it up ladder. Remain polite, yet firm.

Yeah I have other choices that aren’t crazy drives from me like 6 or 7 with in a 40ml radius!! I think the tech started it with a impact gun!!

How it happened is of little concern or matter.

You have been sent home with a SAFETY issue. The 5 remaining lugs are subject to 20% more load. This is a significant increase.

I’m not siding with the dealership.
But we don’t know enough info to say that the dealership sent OP home with a Safety Issue.
OP states, “file a claim or pay out of pocket”.

Which, puts OP in a predicament. Pay for the repair on the spot , or file a claim and leave the truck there. It sucks, but the dealership “probably” has no liability. Unless they specifically told OP to drive it home.

The whole thing sucks. It’s just a stud and nut. This should not be as big of a deal as it is.
If I were the dealership, I’d apologized and make it right. I guess that’s why I don’t own a repair shop?

OP's original words. He was sent home.

5 lugs out of 6 can easily lead to an early failure. A 20% increase in a fatigue loading shortens the time to failure of the next lug. The remaining 4 lugs will be loaded 50% more than normal. When 3 lugs fail, the remaining have 100% increased load. Cascading failure happen quickly.

OP needs to press the dealer for repair at 0 cost to OP.

I'd find a better dealer, definitely not a good idea to send out a car missing a lug nut. A reputable shop wouldn't let it leave regardless who pays for it.

Dipshit tech stripped it and scumbag dealer sends you home with 5 lug nuts lmao. Thats right up there with the Ford dealer who told me my bad wheel bearing that went clunk-clunk-clunk on the highway was not a safety/warranty issue.

You might point out that the Dealer was most likely the last people to touch your lug nuts. During a proper Pre Delivery Inspection the lug nuts should have been checked for proper torque per a pre delivery check sheet.

Any responsible dealer would of instantly looked at the truck, looked at the miles, then just taken care of it while giving you a update. Its a cheap fix for them, and depending on how they handle it will show the customer that the dealer cares about them just as much as they do making money.

Lowest paid shop employee rotates your tires, changes your oil, sets your tire pressures, looks at the pretty fluids and washes your truck with last weeks laundry.

Sometimes they are conscientious. Sometimes well managed. Sometimes both. Too many times neither.

    Sometimes 'free service' isn't.
