I installed a powered, heated shower in my 99. Electric pump recirculates water through an under hood heat exchanger, thermostat in glove box ensures I don’t overheat the water, and now I have a 110f shower for winter surfing and camping. V3.0 will have more capacity and a tank under an upcoming camper shell bed setup.

 

I would like more details please. Great job!

I mounted the pump down beneath the front right side of the bed, just drilled through and mounted it upside down to the bottom of the bed. Water exits the front of the reservoir tube and runs to the pump, then gets sent through the heat exchanger and enters back at the rear of the tube so the temp gets mixed up well. When you close the lever valve on the bottom back of the reservoir tube, that circulation stops and you get 30psi of water out of the quick connect fitting in the bed. It will shoot 10-15’ out of a normal garden hose



traced the plumbing for the heat exchanger up the right side of the frame into the engine bay. Cut into the heater core lines and plumbed the hot side of the heat exchanger with shutoff valves in case anything starts leaking.




12v thermostat for aquariums mounted in the glove box stops the circulation when the temp gets to the preset. The probe is mounted on the incoming fresh water line just before the heat exchanger.


All manually controllable with a six channel remote relay box mounted in the front right of the engine bay and wired to the battery.



it’s pretty well sorted now. It carried about 3.5gal of water and heats it from 55 to 130 in about 8 minutes. Next one will carry 6-8 gallons, so probably 10-12min heat time

Where did you put the fuse box for the switch panel? I have one of those showing up Thursday.

 

The fuses are built into the box along the right side in the photo. If you were worried, you could put a 50a circuit breaker in the main power line but I haven’t bothered yet.

 

I was wondering where you mounted the box.

 

Oh gothca. It’s in the front passenger side of the engine compartment in the space behind the air box. Fits great bolted right to the vertical portion there.

I got it off Amazon. Not sure if they like Amazon links around here, but it’s listed as “AB Plate Heat Exchanger, 3"x8" 16 Plates”

It was $90 or so. But my god these things are efficient. The rate of heating is absurd. If you want to look for a cheaper option, and brazed-plate wort chiller for brewing does the same job.
The 10-plate smaller version would be more than sufficient if you can wait a little longer

V1.0 used the otherwise empty trans fluid heat exchanger in the bottom of my radiator (my truck’s manual so it doesn’t use it), but I got hardly any heat at all out of the bottom of the radiator.

You can extend it pretty easily, just get some like sized cable and solder an extension into it. Or mount a CB in between and then you don’t even have to splice it.

I got mine bolted in, lined the drawers, and loaded up a few things. You will definitely need Add-A-Leafs. I'm hoping mine arrive soon.

Content weight - Other = unknown.
Due to the weight, I'm undecided if the box will remain. It's better suited in a full size truck.
