3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

Why not just test them one by one? You don't have to rip apart everything. Be patient in your debugging.

 

I don't see how that is an excuse to ignore them.

 

Not so much about rules, more about common sense. Post a question, wait for a response.

 

Third gens require a certain amount of resistance. I don't recall what it is but my buddy had a similar issue that you have. He ended up talking with VLEDs and they got him squared away. Although that was using VLEDs bulbs as well. I believe some JDMAstar LED bulbs have built in resistors to "eliminate" hyper flash, but that does not always work.

 

i had those jdma led's in my turn signal and couldn't get rid of the hyperflash with the headlights on. with the headlights off they were fine (sometimes). just got rid of them. not worth it.

 

I would just buy quality bulbs from the start and you won't have headaches down the road. If you stick with Diode Dynamics or VLEDS you will have high quality LEDs and customer service that backs up their products.

 

The Nokya harness isn't available anymore, any other recommendations?

If I could source the connectors and pins I could probably make these now that I have the tools and adequate experience. Might be nice to have something as short as possible.

I think I have a few H11 sockets in my drawer from when I added extensions to mine for tapping for a relay signal. I think I got them in a 10 pack on eBay. There are probably higher quality ones out there though. I'll find the listing tomorrow.

 

Hey @crashnburn80 are you actually going to review the new Morimotos? I know you are on to the Jeep platform. Just curious if it’s actually going to happen. Been holding off on buying a set pending your results! Thanks for all of your research and time dedicated to this platform.

 

I consulted a bit with @Puppypunter and ordered a small set of terminals and some male connectors he thinks are ok. Trying to find some females.

If anyone wants my Nokya harness I can resell it for $20. IIRC, it keeps the same reversed polarity which doesn’t matter for halogen bulbs.

I’ll see if I can build a very short pigtail which also reverses the polarity.

Most of the connectors out there are cheap with complaints of loose fit. It would be awesome to locate a source for the OEM H9 female Toyota uses. So far I haven’t found it. I might also try some ceramic options. None of them look all that great to me though.

I think I have some un-modded H9’s I can test fit with so that part is easy.

 

I hope these 9011’s live up to the hype. I picked up a set of korean osram’s locally to replace my auxito led’s. Pulling out of the garage they look dimmer so im crossing my fingers.

 

@crashnburn80 , I'm considering upgrading to the OEM LED assemblies based on your test results in a Tacoma I have on order. I couldn't find an intensity-versus-distance plot of OEM LEDs versus the GE +130 (I may have missed it) It did seem the OEM LEDs are noticeably better than even the H9 upgrade, but your comment about snowy climates gives me pause.

We get snow and ice every winter, not a lot of accumulation, but frequently. Typically I start the engine, flip the lights and rear defrost on, and let them melt ice while I scrape my windows. Within a few minutes I can gently wipe the lights clear and drive off.

Will this not work anymore with the LEDs? I don't want to be scraping them or dumping washer fluid trying to melt ice.

 

I’ve wondered about this myself? Driving at night when it’s snowing and headlights not generating any heat to melt the accumulating snow and ice... hmmmm

TLDR from this is, buy 2nd gen

As to snow melt, I have yet to get within 100 miles of snow with my truck so I have nothing helpful to add there yet.

*** LED measurements are either taken from measurements made at 18' or interpolated from measurements made at 42' to 18' (I believe for the Hikari's specifically). Crash has explained how LED light output should be measured at distance, his practical limit is 42'. Diode Dynamics has a 50' test environment which is even better. The bottom line, though, is that for LED measurements, 18' is insufficient and does not tell the full story. However, I don't believe crash has halogen measurements at 42' so there isn't any better way to compare everything all one one graph than using the 18' numbers. Also note that the Headlight Revolution GTR is not recommended (for reasons why read the first few posts) meanwhile the Morimoto 2stroke 3.0 is recommended (again please read the first few posts). So, while this graph is not meant to be misleading, it has some misleading characteristics. Still, it is somewhat helpful to see everything mixed together in one big pot.
