I've read 100s of reviews, searched this forum and the 2nd Gen forum, and I know there's going to be "Get a Diamondback/Bakflip/other brand hard tonneau and get the peace of mind" crowd, balanced perfectly by "sucks losing part of your bed, my soft cover stows" crowd.

I've heard horror stories personally, but it seems to frequently be 2nd, 3rd or more hand info about why you need a bankvault covering the bed. I dont haul tools, rifles get stowed in the cab; I just need a little more dry space when hauling the fam around. I think soft is the way to go, but my biggest hangup is it getting cut and then I'm in for a second one.

Real world, what damage or theft have you experienced and where are you located(state)?

I never experienced any break ins, but I invested in a Trail Ridge hard cover for a lil over $300. Any break in is possible but at least with a hard cover, no chance of slits and wasted money.

Far as I can tell, that isnt available for 2nd gens. Shame. I would've for sure gave it a run for $300

It's really about minimizing risk as much as you can. If you park or leave the vehicle in places where there are people more likely to want to steal stuff, you will have increased issues.

I think the real world risk is very small, you just have to use your noodle about where you leave the vehicle unattended.

That being said, a soft cover definitely presents an easier opportunity for a quick smash and grab than a hard shell does.

I used to leave my old truck with a hard tonneau cover parked in downtown Seattle all the time, and never had an issue. I probably wouldn't have felt as confident if I had a soft cover there.
