I installed the unit back in December. I haven't installed a car stereo since high school, >30 years ago. I was going to use Crutchfield's wire service, but it often isn't available when they are busy. So, I spent several hours doing all the wiring at my kitchen island (my garage isn't heated and it was pretty cold in northern Indiana in December). I opted to use the adapters for use with the existing GPS and satellite antennas. I didn't want any additional clutter around the truck.

When I finally went out to install it in the truck, it was fairly simple...just plug and play at the stage. I will say that it is a little bit of a pain, getting it installed just right (with the screen adjustments). This is only bothersome because, with the screen being so large, you need to attach/reattach it each time you are checking fitment... you can't fit the dash molding around it.

I have the OEM USB plug working, I wired the microphone to replace the OEM one (the cord was just barely long enough to reach). Wired/wireless android auto is working flawlessly. I tested the wireless screen mirroring out only once, but it seems to work flawlessly as well. The thing seemed a little too big when I first installed it, but I really have come to love it. All and all, I can't find much to complain about with the unit...except for the little weather widget's not regularly connecting (but I don't use it much anyways...it just kind of looks pretty when it does work).

Looks really nice. I just wish I could see someone’s install on a pre 2016.

Looks really good! Did you wind up with the screen in the factory setting or did you extend it out? I decided to also install a dash cam with mine, and I think I’ll nix the HDMI cable as I’ll probably never use it.
I have no idea when the head unit will be back in stock, so I’m just waiting (im)patiently.

Did you put the mic in the factory location? If so, did you drop the headliner a bit in the front to run the mic, or were you able to do it without doing that?

I did a little tweaking. If I recall, I may have kept the depth where it was (I wanted as close to the dash as possible) and may have shifted it vertically a bit to make room for seeing hazard switch, etc on the dash.

Yes, I did use the factory mic location. Removing the A pillar, I ran it along the airbags and such and was able to work it under the headliner without dropping it. I dropped the crawl control access panel and from there I tugged alternately at the mic cable from the A pillar and crawl control to kind of work it deeper into the headliner, further away from the windshield. I left the OEM mic in the headliner, for reinstalling the OEM stereo if I choose to later. I was able to fabricate (using the term very loosely) a bracket that seems to hold the new mic in the OEM location very nicely. Then I added some sound deadening behind it. I think, from all accounts, it is better than the OEM mic.

Still waiting for the DMX1057XR to come back in stock at Crutchfield. It looks like COVID has affected shipments of Kenwood units to nearly every company that sells car audio. Bummer. I've installed this thing about a dozen times in my sleep!:annoyed:

Update: Still waiting on the Kenwood head unit from Crutchfield. My daughter's Kenwood is also on backorder. Four weeks now since I ordered it and they can't even give me an ETA to them. Although no one is saying so, the delay is likely due to a massive fire in October at the company (AKM) in Japan that makes chips for audio and other electronic equipment. COVID probably has some part in this, but the backorders are so long now that the fire must be to blame. We'll see! If you don't know about the fire and are interested in reading up on it, just Google 'AKM fire'.

Same. This is the top of my list for my 2015. I'm trying to decide between it or whatever Kenwood Excelon will flush fit.

I talked to someone at Crutchfield this morning. They are waiting on a shipment of 175 of the 1057XR models and 21 (including me) have already been ordered. I ordered mine on 2/17. The guy I spoke with said the last shipment of these that they received was 54 units on January 20th. Someone at Kenwood told me they’re sending them out “in spurts”. I’m hoping it’s not too long before they come in. What I can’t find out is how much of the delay is due to Covid and how much is due to the factory fire. It’s probably both. But for me, anyway, the 1057XR is worth the wait.

I did the same install, great head unit. I replaced the fronts with Morel's and Rears with Kenwoods. Had Kenwoods in the front but very harsh. The Morel's are pretty good but I just can't tame the mid tweeter and high tweeter (ended up installing a small tweeter in the sail). Just curious if you kept stock speakers or aftermarket and what you installed?

I’m going to keep the stock speakers for now. You and I have the same year and model truck. Any suggestions or things to keep in mind for the install? Did you use the factory GPS antenna, and did you have to connect the blue FM antenna wire? Those are the only things I’m still unclear on. Thanks!

Well, my stuff should arrive tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have the install completed by the weekend. With the shipment confirmation from Crutchfield, I received a wiring guide, which I've attached here for anyone who is contemplating a similar installation. This is for a 2018 Tacoma with the non-JBL system. I'll also be installing a Kenwood dashcam, but that just involves tapping three wires into the harness closest to the radio...

For those interested, Five Star Stereo (Dean & Fernando) posted part 1 this morning of an install of the nav version of this head unit into a 3rd gen Tacoma.

Mine is out for delivery today, so I’m hoping these new vids can tidy up whatever remaining questions I have before I dive in.
