I have had a 2016 with V6 since new. It now has 60K miles. I did get the latest transmission software upgrade but the over all performance is still really bad. Other owners tell me theirs is the same. My wife's Rav4 four cylinder performs infinitely better.

The Tacoma V6 has very poor low rpm power and the power curve feels really lumpy while driving. Then all of the sudden it wakes up around 3800 rpm and makes strong power. It seems to hesitate when shifting and sometimes is in the wrong gear. The ETC switch makes it a little better but it does not coast well with that on. It could be that the lumpy power curve makes life hard for the transmission but it is hard to tell. Are there any mods to improve the low end power, smooth out the power band and improve shifting? I did some searching in this forum and see OVTune mentioned but it is mostly related to max power. I don't really care about max power but want some low end power and smooth performance.

I once drove a 4 cylinder version. Low end power was the same or better and power/ shifting were smoother. All it seemed to be missing was that 3800 rpm surge which is not very useful in daily driving.

See the list of folks in my Feelers thread.

Yes. The tune levels out that 3,500rpm surge by filling in the missing torque from idle on up. The tune has a completely re-written transmission code.

@chanvchau tuned my 2019 last week in the Sacramento area. Nice guy and professional.

Went with his performance tune. Engine and trans feel like a "normal" vehicle with a more responsive pedal, torque at lower rpms, and less frequent shifting from the automatic with higher shift points. Have not needed ECT since and rarely use S mode, both of which were previously deployed every time. So far so good!

Better. There is much less flooring the pedal and wacky shifting going on.

    Fair enough.

I contacted Chan through FB, and he told me about the meetup in Citrus Heights on Sunday.

I'll probably go and get a tune.

Have you tried any other than the performance one?

Have not. Currently happy and feel the $ were well spent but might b fun to try others. Recommend taking a screenshot of the specific tune file used for future reference.

Ive driven both the regular 87 tune and the performance 87 2.0. I recommend it the performance tune.

@chanvchau completed my tune 800 miles ago and it took about 15 minutes. It is a huge improvement and I highly recommend. I think I picked up 2 mpg but it is a little hard to tell because my surface street/ freeway mix changed around the same time.
