As I said, installing the Bushwhacker flares we noticed our tires were all cracked and dangerous looking, so we bit the bullet and got four new one...but what size should we get? The 265/70/16 looked REALLY tiny with the new flares on it, so should I stay safe and go with 265/75/16 or go for broke with a 285/75/16? Please note I do have 5100s all around with OME 884 springs on front and an add a leaf on the back.

I do have a local tire guy who I have gone with for many years. At first he said to go with the 265/75/ and would not recommend the larger tires. He called me later that same day and said that he might have been premature on fitting the larger tire. He had on in stock and told me he would test fit the tire on one of my wheels and see. I told him to go with the ones that would fit and order four of them.

Well, he called me this morning to tell me the truck was ready and the 285/75/16 tires were on and had no rubbing issues. I did remind him that I actually go offroad in this truck and he said it should not be an issue. I love the look and might put the half inch strut spacer for the front, but I think it looks awesome....besides all the dirt on my truck.

 

Cab mount chop and pinch weld hammer should have you good to go.

 

Built a platform out of 3/4” plywood today. All that’s left is to create some brackets to secure it to the seat bolts. I’m going to add D rings and carry a tote with all my spare fluids and parts back here. I want it very well secured so it stays put in case of an accident.

Vibration problem solved! I had replaced my u-joints last September or so and have been living with a significant vibration problem ever since. The weather finally warmed up enough to work on it.

Turns out all I had to do was to press out the middle u-joint and rotate the shaft 180 degrees. Whatever vibration was there has either gone away or has been neutralized. In either case, I'm a very happy camper!!

 

I did buy a cab chop plate and will look at finally put that in. I am just pumped that these tires did fit.

 

Yup. All for a 12v cover lol. My OCD approves

 

These are a horrible choice with that much milesage per year. They are incredibly soft and even rotating every 5 k they are cupping on my truck. They are some of the softest tires you can buy. Don’t buy them they’ll barely last you a year w 25k miles

 

Cleaned the throttle body and mass air flow sensor just now.

Installed ammo cans on the rails on each side of the bed. One has my straps and shovel, the other has my air compressor.

 

Hey Randy, which size Apache boxes are those you're using behing your seats? I've been thinking of getting two of those to also help support a rear platform.

 

They’re the 4800. I have one for my primary recovery gear and one for all of my tools. I’m a HUGE fan of them for the price. These don’t support the platform though. I wanted to be able to remove them if I have stuff on the platform. I can take a pic of how I have 2x4’s supporting underneath tomorrow. It’s every easy.

also this pic shows how I have my 2x4s. The red lines are two separate pieces, horizontally, i.e. raising it up 2”.

The purple are two vertical supports, each 5” long. That only leaves the front corners unsupported, which is where my metal brackets will come into play.

 

Hello sir, ok, let me break it down to you like this. Moving up to a 33" tire (285's) is actually a very big deal on a 2nd gen. It is more of a commitment if you will. Will it fit....sure. Will it rub in reverse in full chock on road....most likely. Will it rub offroad even with your lift, most definitely. You will most likely need a cab mount chop, a pinch weld folding, and even if you put a 1/2" spacer up front, you need to watch out whether or not you need to upgrade to an aftermarket UCA. You also need to think about the overall with of the tire rubbing on your uca with the possibility of either spacers or different rims with a more negative offset. Then there is going to be a the weight of the tire being very different then you are used to and a big change in gas mileage and loss of low end power. Like I said, big commitment. Personally, I would stay with a 265/75/16 knowing that tires are a big purchase until you are spend more to fit a 285 without issues.
