Imagine loading an object into your bed and needing the tailgate down, plus you have a swing out tire carrier mounted to your bumper.

All the designs I've seen latch into the bumper which in this case is now behind the tailgate which is down and leaving the tire swung out blocks your tail light...

I realize this might be another case of "you can't have your cake and eat it too."

What are the thoughts out there on this issue?

Those who have this setup, what is your work around?

So if I understand your question, the issue is having the tailgate down and using the truck? I think you forfeit usability once the spare goes there. I have a receiver hitch mounted swing away that I made... I can take it out at anytime. I am also going to make a bed mount so I don't have to carry it all the time-also loosing bed space in a short bed. I don't think there is an easy solution once tire size exceeds what can be carried down below.
