If you doing extreme offroading, then Jeep Wranglers are the best BY FAR.
If you are doing extreme offroading but still need a pickup truck to haul stuff, then get the Gladiator.

The Tacoma is great for offroading too but it also has compromises for reliability and everyday driving. Toyota tries to design it's vehicles to appeal to a wider spectrum of customers. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is specialized for the Offroad market.

They seem to do this a lot. honestly never seen any Toyota snap an axle. I'm sure it's happened but Jeep seems to be good at it.

I have no clue. I forgot it was even a thing until a few days ago. It looked better than the FX4, but not quite the Ranger Raptor. When I was truck shopping, I eagerly awaited the Ranger. When it arrived, I was a little disappointed. As much as I tend to prefer "European" cars, the Ranger looked too "overseas" to me. Tall and thin. I was also disappointed by the interior. Same with the Colorado. The Ranger has grown on me since, but I'm still not sure I'd purchase one. For a variety of reasons, I ended up with the Tacoma. It wasn't because I thought it was the best choice, but because it checked more boxes.

The HiLux has an 'overseas" look. Which I like.

Exactly. I think my problem is that before release I see pictures and crap and I get this preconception in my head that isn't fulfilled when the real deals hit the lot. I've seen a few Rangers since my initial impression and I've liked them better.

What makes the ZR2 and Bison so attractive is some of the standard features that they come with such as locking front and rear diffs. As well as their high tech shocks. How ever if you want to mod and make it your own the cost of A upgrading those shocks to a longer travel version is significant. And if your just going to "throw" them away and put something else on all together then why pay the premium for them just to take them off to upgrade when you can spend less and buy a tacoma and make it what you want with the money you saved to begin with.
Don't get me wrong the ZR2 is a very capable truck and I like that it has options with the power train however if your doing "Extreme Off roading" I think it will cost more in the long run.

The Fords I just think are ugly and I really don't think they compare to the tacoma at all yet with any of there packages.

This is my objective opinion trying not to put any bias into it and thinking logically of what your end goals might be.

I have a F150 company truck. I went to the Ford dealer the other day to get my truck inspected and they had a ranger in there with a lift and some mods they was working on. Well me and the guy at the service desk were talking and I asked him what he thought about them and his reply was they were junk in his opinion. He also mentioned you had to take one of the front tires off to change oil and filter I assume to get to the filter.

If you want to do "XtREzmE OfF_RoADiNg" get an '85 Bronco on '40 MT Super Swampers and call it a day. Also don't forget at least 7 light bars. 6 and you won't be able to see anything. 8 is too much.

In all seriousness if you want a vehicle specifically for offroading and don't plan to DD it, get something older/used so that you're comfortable beating the shit out of it and repairs are cheaper. '05-09 Taco maybe? The first gen nissan xterras were pretty dope too. Took one of those to 280k miles with a lot of mud holes in between

Op I think a big question for people here and on the Ford and Chevy forums need answered to help you would be more descriptions around the intended use.

where do you live/like to go and how much gear are you bringing etc...

Yeah, that's my concern with the Gladiator, the wheelbase is long but even more concerning is the very long rear overhang.

Its such a vague question. What is extreme offroading? What do you need to take with you? To me extreme offroading could either be KoH stuff, or maybe doing a few days on the Rubicon trail, or even doing some desert racing - all of which require different vehicles.

Just watched a Gladiator do a bunch of trails in Moab and they seemed to do just fine.
Sure I saw a Jeep on the side of the road on fire but a lot of people drive them.

I think some people’s idea of extreme off roading is completely different then mine. No anything but suspension and engine, no ac, no radio, no doors, no real body to smash. All roll bars and bumpers, 42” tires, spool in the rear, Detroit locker front, small fuel cell, duel transfer cases, that’s extreme off roading.
