Garage Shop: Tools

So I already have a 48” Husky tool box for most of my stuff buuuut I really needed a another small tool box for rolling in and out of the garage and having my stuff close to me while working on my truck or other peoples trucks and so I finally gave in and grabbed one of the US general 5 drawer mechanic’s carts and I really like it. Plus my wife told me she really likes the green when I set it all up. I’m happy with the purchase

Now time to really get organized like some of you guys and have a place for everything

Dude, so I have windows on the front door of my garage and while I was working in here like an hour ago, the sun was coming through the windows and bouncing off the toolbox and making my entire garage GREEN!! Lol

 

Ugh that green..I'm torn between black and green for my 72. Part of the reason I've held off. Kinda bummed when I traded my green for my brother's black roll cart.

 

Funny thing is, the Black of my Husky box and the Green of the US general box made me think of my Favorite looking Bike, a Kawasaki Ninja. And you just happen to have one right behind the tool boxes lol!!

I think either way you’ll have a good color!

Haha I’ve loved that Ninja green from the moment I saw it haha. Was an easy decision for the tool box for me haha

 

It's a great color.. Everytime I'm torn about selling, I see that color.

Thinking a black 72 with green trim and god forbid I need a second cart, I'll go with a green.

 

I think that’s good choice. A big box of green would be a lot of green in your face hahaha.

 

I hate to break it to you but you’ll never have a “place for everything “. You’ll always have a handful of tools that you’ll think doesn’t go with the tools in this drawer or that drawer, you’ll end up just tossing it in a drawer that has space. Right now I have one drawer that has a pneumatic vacuum with large crows foot set. I have another drawer that has about 10 different hammers and bins of clecos. But that’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes. I have other drawers that may not make the best sense but you put things where they fit sometimes.

Congrats on the box though, it’s an awesome color!

 

Spent the money on a 44" general and never looking back. Well worth the money.

You can tell the quality stuff at HF because its always the stuff they exclude from coupons.

 

Bought a 4lb engineers sledge at HF, and broke it in 5 minutes yesterday. New rule is I won’t buy anything of theirs that could kill me if it failed (ie recalled floor jacks and jack stands).

I am very very skeptical of their shit. After i had to return recalled jack stands and the hammer.

 

I thought the consensus on the floor jacks were that they were pretty good? I hadnt heard of the recall on them.

Floor jacks: yes

Jack Stands: no. I dont think they even sell them anymore

 

Huh, I didn't realize they discontinued them. Makes sense after the fiasco. looks like they still have the aluminum ones though.

 

I know this is a couple weeks old but I was stupidly wearing a glove near a horizontal mill (I'm not a machinist, I was the helper) and the glove got caught. Being stupid and tired from working 16 hour shifts and was brushing hot sharp chips away from the cutter to get a good finish. Luckily, my buddy Mark that was running the machine, was crazy fast on the stop button and it was the one of the two of these mills in the shop that had a spindle brake. I got wrapped up around the spindle and tore some muscles in my arm and shoulder and the end mill cut my middle finger on my left hand to the bone. I had to get ligaments reattached in my finger surgically. I was 18 years old.

I've been working in the power industry since I was 17 and started electrical tech at 15 specializing in industrial motor control. I know people missing finger tips and more. I've seen flesh hanging from exposed bone of dear friends and family from stupid mistakes. I am the resident safety freak around my friends and family. Shirt sleeves near belt sanders, gloves near anything rotating, no chaps with chainsaws, safety glasses and face shields, etc. The proper safety gear exists because of spilt blood. I see the scar on my finger everyday when I put my silicone wedding band on to remind me of my mistake and that I cannot let that happen again for the sake of my wife and daughter. Luck doesn't quantify my experience. Someone helped Mark stop that machine that day. There is no reason on this planet why I am here today with all my limps other than that. Human flesh and bone doesn't stand a chance against a 30hp drive motor on a machine 2.5 stories tall. A 1/3 hp bench grinder can and will fuck you up if you get complacent. If you wear gloves for a little cut/cleanliness protection while working around grinders, the textured Mechanix wear disposables are about as robust as you would want.

The childproofing of intense operations and equipment is a huge hazard. I'm 31 and got almost 14 years in the power industry. I've done 100,000+ volt HiPot testing in the field and I currently do 60,000 volt electric tests a few days a week. Leakage current through the insulation system can be 2-4 amps of current (running through the insulation! Wrap your head around that.) This shit will legit kill big game. I tell people you won't feel a thing cause you're brain won't process it before I can see your skeleton . The supervisor wants to put together picture books and get more people trained. We don't need more people trained. The more people trained the less frequency and false confidence the people who do it will have. The other day I had a 60kV AC test that was 210,000 watts of power. The last thing you want is somebody to do this twice a year.

There needs to be a sense of respect between the person and the equipment. Fear is bad. Confidence is good but you have to maintain the respect. The minute you don't, your life will be different forever. Doesn't matter if its a scar or worse, it will be different.

Garage Gallery has 600,000 post. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a devoted TW guy, but that site has it all for the subject matter above, and more. Just more resources.
