Any Tacoma owners move on to a domestic truck or other vehicle?

I realize that if you’re still browsing tacomaworld and no longer own one you probably regret the swap, but nonetheless...

has anyone here traded up into the F150/1500 territory of ram/Silverado/Ford?

I’ve been drooling over the trail boss which is why I ask.

how was your experience? Any reason you switched/came back to the yota?

Edit: additionally I have been loving on V8 muscle cars lately as well. Never thought I’d buy anything other than Toyota or Subaru but the Camaro SS 1LE has really tickled my 25 y/o testosterone

Toyota and Subaru are a cult. I love it.

 

If I wanted a full size truck, I would have definitely went with the F150. Far more reliable than the GM twins or the RAM. Plus great power and MPG. The aluminum is also great for the rust belt. The Titan is a joke and the Tundra is way outdated, not to mention underpowered and has poor gas mileage. Reliability alone wouldn't overcome the poor MPG.

I was a GM guy, but went with Toyota for my vehicle since I didn't need a full size. I had some trust issues with GM and the Ranger and Gladiator were out of the question. As was the Ridgeline and Frontier.

 

In 2017 I sold my 2nd gen Taco and was shopping for a fullsize, a GM is out of the question.....nope, no way, no how.....I looked at the Ram, F150 & Tundra. The Ram was nice but I couldn't get over it was still a Dodge, I really liked the F150 but at the time you couldn't find a V8, they were really pushing the Ecoboost, I drove the Tundra and was hooked. I still have it, some say it's old tech but it's reliable as f*ck and has all the power I need. I just recently bought another Taco, this time an '18 to use as my work vehicle, the Tundra is still my favorite.

 

thanks for the help buddy, I don’t know much about domestics, my dad was big in Chevy then realized that he was paying for repairs while still paying on the truck and he had enough and went all Toyota.

Reliability is my main concern with any domestic, the Silverado looks the best to me, but the F150 seems the most rational. Better deals and more people vouching for the capability

 

I went to a Honda Accord after trading my auto 18 Tacoma . I hated the auto drove the accord for 1 year and came back to a Tacoma only this time I got a manual .

 

Nice man, everyone always picks on the vehicles that are dated tech but the tundra is dead ass reliable and they won’t be making anymore of them after 2021. I miss my 1st Gen so much it’s not even funny - it was the perfect size and had just enough space to fit a dog in the access cab.

Definitely still interested in a Tundra just curious how bad the buyers remorse would be on a domestic.

 

I think manuals are cool for sure, but don’t think I’d be into one in a truck. I’d rather have a nice auto truck and a manual camaro/challenger/mustang. I know I’ll get destroyed for that opinion on here but I really couldn’t get behind the manual when I test drove one. Then again I’m a 2 wheel guy and am severely spoiled.

Those accords are sick with the 2.0T though. Same engine as the Type R just detuned. I drove a type R for a week and that thing is a HOOT. Just not $40k hoot material, for $40k I need a long hood and a V8 that makes my gf wet when you start it up

 

Yeah, I know a lot of coworkers who have Chevrolets and a lot who've had problems. Combined with the problems with the GMs we've owned throughout my life lead me back to Ford, where I've had fewer issues. (We've owned Dodge vehicles too with more issues than the GMs). I would likely have gotten the 2.7L EcoBoost Lariat in the F150. The 5.0L began burning oil after the 2018 refresh and I'm not sure if they've fixed it after the 2021 remodel. (Probably too soon to tell).

 

I went from my reliable but rusty 94 Toyota 4x4 PU. To a Brand new 2004 F-250 super duty. I had two major repairs under warranty. But yeah, it was bigger, had a Diesel, and was a really good work truck.

 

It’s funny that a lot of folks feel that way, want the manual in the sports type car, auto in the truck. But for me, I think a truck should be a manual, as that’s what trucks where when I was growing up. I’m not an automatic fan, but I’m getting used to the Limited 4Runner with an auto transmission.

 

I travel all over the country for work, sometimes Mexico & Canada. We build machine tools for all the automakers ...all of them along with other industries.. If they have a presence in North America I've dealt with them. That's what kept me from seriously considering the Ram, I know how they're built. It was gonna be a Ford or a Yota. Toyota's are sometimes boring but boring is reliable. I travel too much to deal with a vehicle I can't trust, last year I put almost 50K miles on for work which didn't include 5 weeks for Covid shutdown & travel by air 4 or 5 times.

 

Right on, I’m a huge fan of the 5.0. Sucks they’re burning oil now. The new 2021s look real nice too.

based on looks alone I think the Ram looks great, but I kinda hate Dodge. I have no real good reason to back this up, just hear nothing but bad things and the limited amount of people I know the at own them I kinda think are tool bags

 

I would love a diesel. That sounds like a nice truck especially if you got the repairs done under warranty.

 

Ive heard that a lot too actually. Some guys really prefer the manual in a truck. Unfortunately I didn’t grow up in that era where trucks were work vehicles and had no amenities besides maybe A/C. I think the 4.0 pairs nicely to the auto, glad you’re liking the 4R

 

JEEPERS CREEPERS 50K?! A full time job just driving, I’d go Toyota every day of the week in that case as well.

 

Yeah the RAM trucks got a lot of praise for their interior. But, I know 2 coworkers who have had them and both experienced random issues too. That and I just have some trust issues with FCA.

 

Completely agree. They’re great until they start aging. Again, no experience but I’ve never heard anything good about FCA reliability

 

Haha.....I don't just drive. Applications Engineer (fancy word for "I figure out how to make sh*t"). The driving can get old but I get to live where I want and get lots of time off
