Shifting in 4H and 4L (AT)

Hey all,

I don’t know if this is a stupid question but I don’t really care. I’ve been going down some steep declines while in 4H and 4L and have manually shifted down in gears to slow the descent without riding my breaks.

Is this bad for the transfer case or transmission? Or is it totally normal? It feels like the right thing to do but I’m just not sure.

 

Manually shifting an AT is always good. It won't downshift until it is okay.

Manually shifting ATs has been my thing since I started driving in the 80s.

 

4lo I typically encourage manual mode, usually only S1 or S2

Try using the crawl control for controlling how fast you decelerate down a hill, you can change the speed on the fly.

You have a strong Toyota truck, use the shifter!

 

You won't hurt anything if thats what your asking.
