Gen III Tacoma Compared to a 1970 Full Size Pickup - How "small" are our trucks really?

Trying to settle a bet, I made this. The argument was old Full-Size trucks were way bigger and more powerful than our "Cute, Little" Tacomas.

I was honestly surprised by how similar they actually are.

 

Big difference is back then almost all trucks were regular cabs.... standard bed was 8 feet and short beds were 6ft. Now the crew cab with 5 foot bed is probably the most common truck configuration.

 

Agreed, that should have been compared to a regular cab Tacoma for a more accurate comparison.

 

Well and how absolutely massive the modern "full-size" truck is. Fifty years ago, the Tacoma was a full-size.

 

Even compared to full size trucks of say the 90s, our Tacomas aren't that small. They've gotten to the size full-size used to be. But full size trucks have grown too and now they've become monstrosities. Too big for my taste. I've got nothing to compensate for.

The funny one for me is that I recently rolled slowly past a new Suburban. My wife has always complained that the Taco was huge. I would always say that it is the smallest that can be bought.

Seeing that the Suburban appeared to be about the same length, I did some googling and apologized to my wife.

Parked next to each other, the ACLB / DCSB is about the same length, but the DCLBs are the same length. Pretty crazy.

 

Just to clarify you're saying that the ACLB/DCSB are the same length as each other, and that the DCLB is the same length as the new suburbans?

The last regular cab Tacoma was 2014 if l am not mistaken and its dimensions would be:
109.6" Wheelbase
190.4" Length
74.6" Wide
69.9" High

 

I pulled data from these two graphics.

Toyota makes two Tacoma Frames.
A 127" Wheelbase/ 212" Overall length
A 140" Wheelbase/ 225" Overall Length.

So the ACLB and DCSB use the same chassis and are the same length.

 

I would like to see how it compares to the original Toyota pickup

 

That's a good looking rig.

 

GVWR up to 7500 lbs for the GM and weighs less than the Tacoma. Obviously standards have changed, but damn.

Something I've been curious of for a while, is why the GVWR on the Tacoma and trucks in general is so low? Look up the "payload" of a Corolla. It's almost the same as my 4x4 DCSB. Seriously what gives?

 

But our Tacos are too light to tow what we're rated for.


There are a lot of factors that go into the gross weight. There's the payload capacity to keep the lawyers happy and then there is common sense.

I think this is to push people into buying the Tundra. If the GVWR of the Tacoma was a mere 600lbs more, it would qualify for the 100% business depreciation tax benefit.

I really hate how companies do this. Ford hobbles the Ranger to sell more F150s, Toyota hobbles the Tacoma to sell more Tundra's. I gotta think a Tundra costs as much to make as a Tacoma, but they can charge more for it. It's frustrating.

 

If I could find some decent artwork of a SR5 and some reliable specs, I could probably make that happen.

 

So if the progression is bigger each gen, the 4th Gen should have a V8 It just makes sense.
