Hi Taco world, I recently installed a fox 2.5 extended travel lift on my 2020 Tacoma. I now have this noise/feeling coming from the power steering.

    https://youtu.be/EfU8urVPAGM

I think it could be that the uniball joints in my UCAs were unusually stiff when I got them new, I had to put the spindle bolt through the misalignment spacers in the uniball and hit it with a deadblow to get them to move at all. It doesn't look like the uniball is moving when I move the wheel back and forth stopped or at low speeds. I had someone turn the wheel back and forth with the truck stopped and the uniballs didn't move at all, I put my hand on the uniball joint while the wheel was being turned and I could feel it clicking/popping like it was trying to move but it couldn't. I'm thinking this could be causing stress on the power steering which is what is causing the noise?

All advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Did you ever find out what's causing this? I have the same issue. About a 2 inch lift on a 2019 DCLB, with KO3 33's. I think something got screwed up when I had to do a couple of tight turns with the the tires deflated to 10lbs. I'm about to take it to the dealer ship but even though I'm still under warranty, I have a feeling they are going to cry "Altered suspension" and charge me for it. It would be good to know exactly what's wrong before scheduling that appointment. Thanks.

    Just curious...
    What is your caster measurement?

The castor is 3.1 degrees on both wheels. I also have 1 1/4 inch spacers, if that make any difference. The recommended castor range on both wheels is between 1.4 and 2.9 degrees according to documentation I have on the alignment that was done. This was done at the same time I got the lift and had the 33's put on back in 8/20. Got about 11,000 miles on the package since then. About 22,000 miles total on the truck.

In the past, I also wore out my yota power steering pumps. I got use to throwing in Lucas and dealing with some leaks due to the larger tires. I do not know about newer yota ps pumps.

Well this is another “I heavily modified a well engineered truck and now it’s broke thread”.

Did you check the power steering fluid level?

Yes, all the fluids are where they should be. The 20,000 mile service was done last week.

It turns out that the uniball joints in the UCAs were binding, I believe they just needed to be broken in a bit. I confirmed that they were not moving when turning the wheel while stopped or at low speeds. After lubing them and driving a couple hundred miles the uniballs freed up and the noise in the power steering went away. All is well now and the truck is performing beautifully, much better than it did stock.

I was all set to take the truck to the stealership and have them tell me I needed a new power steering rack and have to shell out the estimated $2500 for a replacement. But after reading Wheeling AZ's post, I spent $35 on a grease gun and the recommended grease for my SPD light racing UCAs and... problem solved. I was out West last year doing things that probably depleted the grease in my UCAs. That's just a guess, but hitting each side with 10 pumps and putting a few hundred miles on the truck seem to have solved the problem. I'll definitely be checking all the grease fittings on my truck from now on every oil change if not sooner.
