As usual, this forum is such a huge help.

Today I ordered a Gray Softopper w/ Storage Bag; the LED brake light that was mentioned here, along with the waterproof connectors; some magnets and some neoprene sheets to be able to make a small pouch for the magnets and some Xpel paint protection vinyl.

Supposedly the softopper will arrive Monday, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Thanks, for this tip. I ordered the g hooks and should be arriving today. Have you tried driving around with the sides and rear rolled up using the g hooks? I’m curious to know if they hold on enough with all the wind.

the 8” version posted earlier in this thread seemed too narrow for the turn signal indicators to be useful, so I decided to go for a 30” model.

 

The 30" light is intriguing... As it's an adhesive mounted option, where will you mount it? Under the tailgate? WA state law requires "every passenger truck, passenger van, or passenger sports [sport] utility vehicle manufactured or assembled after September 1, 1993, must be equipped with a rear center high-mounted stop lamp meeting the requirements of RCW 46.37.200(3)." Specifically calling out "high-mounted" so I've focused on third brake light options similar to the one included with Bestop soft toppers... Not thrilled about cutting into a brand new topper however

 

i plan on mounting it the same way the 8” one is mounted. I don’t think the extra width will matter. That said, I have a 8” one as well should I not be able to use the 30” version for some reason.

I don’t have my softtopper yet; is there anything you think will get in the way of the 30”?

 

How did you run the wire? Did you have to cut anything?

 

The only concern I would have is that the 30"er is an adhesive mount, and options for where to mount up high as required in WA would be limited (for me) to the vinyl top above the rear window. Maybe isn't a concern as I have seen numerous posts by individuals who state they have run toppers of one variety or another without a 3rd brake light. At any rate, the I don't know how well an adhesive mount would work with the topper vinyl. I did just see that "westcoastbestcoast" has shared pics and info about this VERY option. So maybe my concerns about the adhesive application are for naught??? I do know the Bestop application requires cutting holes for mounting the included TBL... more to be revealed I suppose

 

The post I quoted above by WestCoastBestCoast is the one I was mimicking, and it is using adhesive above the window, so it is mounted the same place as the Bestop.

I plan on it looking the exact same as his, just with a much wider light bar where his is. I did tag him asking if he had to do any cutting though, as I did assume that he did not without any proof that he didn’t.

 

After some digging, and looking at his post on PC versus "smartphone" screen, it appears no cutting involved I think this is a more desirable option too!

 

I should have my softtopper this week and am planning on doing the install Friday assuming it is here by then. I'll be sure to post up here any information I learn while attempting it. I don't mind being the guinea pig now and then.

 

I used the adhesive to mount the light to a steel bar stock, combined with rare earth magnets inside the softopper that hold the light in place. Rock solid even on the roughest trails, and easy to remove for cleaning.

 

I’ve been out of the truck world for a few years when I went through a Jeep phase. Prior to that I always had tonneau covers. When I bought my Tacoma I ordered one first thing. Well now I see the soft topper and really want that instead. My Tacoma is silver, what would you recommend color wise?

 

I have a cement gray Tacoma and went with the black softtopper. Should be getting shipped any day now.

 

Would you mind throwing up some pictures? Sounds like the route I want to take.
