Are you guys replacing the cartridge type with a regular spin on type filter?

Exactly this. On my first oil change I had immense trouble using the square hole, but when I switched to a socket the filter housing came off real easily. You're able to apply more torque with less strain on the structure of the filter wrench.

Being a tech (not at a dealership) I can say those plastic versions of the housings can kiss my ass. All these idiots at jiffy lubes and dealerships over tighten the shit outta them. Plus they just don't like to come loose. I've broken 3 of the adapters, one the "nut" was welded to the steel cup, twisted that bitch right off. Thankfully these are all the shops tools. Cornwell showed up the next day and I got a nice beefy machined steel one. Still looks like new after a couple hundred of those bastards.

That reminds me, was going to look and see if the aluminum version fit our tacos, seems they do, THANK GOD, I'll be getting one before next oil change lol.

    It's brand new.....So nothing yet!
Did my first oil change at 5000 miles on my 20 tacoma with the 2.7. I had to remove the filter housing and put it in a vise and use a large pair of channel locks to remove the filter after crushing it. This was the factory installed oil filter. As tight as it was I'm not sure a tech would of bothered removing it.

The price on Amazon can vary greatly; I've seen them as cheap as $17.95 for a genuine Toyota housing. If you don't need it right away, put it in your Amazon wish list and keep an eye out for a price change. You also might get one with a long tube. You will have to remove it and replace it with the short tube from your old housing. I seem to remember it is just press fit.

For what's it's worth, purchased a "genuine" aluminum version from Amazon with suspect packaging, OEM part number cut out from OEM box and taped on unmarked box. Looked mostly legit so installed it only to find it there was a slight seep on the back side...returned that POS.

Purchased this OEM aluminum version and it arrived in sealed factory box...legit, no red flags. Installed it this week, MOC okay. Here's a link if anyone is interested.

They impacted that on, not many dealer tech use hand ratchets anymore. Everything is battery impacted on.

Yea... I have to deal with over tightened filters a lot at the dealer.

Almost always the lube techs that do it. Filter can literally be tight enough by hand. All it takes is snug.

If I caught any of our techs using an impact I’d personally beat the shit out of them.

All that being said, the aluminum cap off the 3.5 will work and doesn’t suffer from getting too tight as bad

Avoid the dorman POS caps though... I’ve seen those actually cause engine failure when the center section comes out and someone doesn’t notice it, then the filter collapses

    Work in progress...
The filter socket is made to be turned by a socket but probably, like me, most of us will turn it "like" a socket.

Hey guys don't forget to look at your wheels before you leave the dealership after that oil change. Tire rotations are usually done at the same time and the "first and last time I took mine in for the free service they chowdered every lug hole on my brand new after market wheels. Needless to say it was a very expensive oil change and tire rotation service for them that day

If you get a magic marker or scratch a line at the seat frame to seat, your seat positioning problem will be gone

    On the positive side:
We are really lucky that we can get the room to maneuver a tool or leverage to get that over-tighten sucker out of there. I have seen a multitude of FWD vehicles where you can barely fit a child's hand in there let alone a tool. No telling how many of those get left behind

I changed out my suspension on my Gx460. What surprised me about it is how user-serviceable the parts are made. There a little indicators and signs everywhere that guided me through the process.

No disrespect to Toyota Techs, but it seems like Toyota vehicles are made to be the easiest autos to service. I don't think the techs actually learn anything or are really challenged on problem solving.

Toyota can hire the bottom of the barrel because they don't really need much more than that.

alot of stuff is indeed very simple to work on. wont deny that. but i owned an audi before. that car also, WAY more serviceable than most people would think being euro.

where you find your true techs are when it comes to diagnostic these days. for the most part ALOT of cars made these days are way easier to work on than people think.

the transmission in a camry can be out in 1 hour if you dedicate that time fully to it.

Funny how the wording no disrespect, is usually followed by an insult. And learning is expensive, it’s never free, it cost something to someone. If someone has to learn something before they can work on it, it means I’ll be denied its use longer.

That said, the reason I buy TOYOTA is because I don’t have to be fixing or repairing it daily.
That’s not why I buy a vehicle, I don’t need to learn it, just need it to go places.

Moreover, keep it simple stupid works just fine.

i own 5 toyotas right now (well ones getting sold) and they're just the best out there for no frills vehicles. cant deny that. they're advanced, but at the same time very simple.
