I know there are many posts on the subject of aftermarket HU replacements for 3rd gen. I have seen the mods to make the existing system CarPlay compatible and seen units where you have a NASA control panel on your dash. All certainly options just not what I want if possible. What I am asking is for anyone who has successfully swapped their unit out with a device that sits flush in the existing housing with minimal modification. I don't care about modding brackets and all of that, I am really wanting the factory trim to still work. If you have had one of these successes and dont mind sharing I would like to know what HU you bought. For those of you in the know I am looking at something like this:

Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX DVD receiver at Crutchfield

    Thanks for any input!

I have the 4400nex (the year before model), the wireless carplay makes it worth it

There’s a thread on here about a system called Joying. The headunit for the Corolla fit right into the factory bezel and pretty much plug and play and you have the option of putting in your own Data SIM card into the unit to give it internet access. It looks factory and much cleaner in my opinion than most of the other units out there

Did this go into factory slots with minimal or no modifications?

    Thanks.

If you go through Crutchfield then they have everything you need to make it look like it came from the factory. The only small mod I had to do for my 2nd gen was splice in to a specific wire to send the parking brake signal to the head unit. Without this, I couldn't do the initial android auto setup because it always thought I was in drive mode.

Dasaita PX6 only elongated the mounting holes on the factory bracket. All plug and play. Works with JBL system. Maintains steering wheel controls and all of factory features. Enhanced features like front camera. Got it on Amazon

Well you need the dash kit for it to fit the dash with no gaps, and the install kit so it'll be "Plug and play" Then you have to run the mic somewhere

How has this held up for you thus far? Does it plug into the factory mic as well? It’s the cleanest most factory look I’ve seen.

I went with the Joying which is a couple hundred cheaper than the Dasaita PX6 and also because of the huge write up on this guys build. Complete thread on it with tons of info.

3rd gen audio build - Android, 3 way components, 3 amps! wow! | Page 3 | Tacoma World

I will see how it goes and if necessary go with a higher end like Pioneer/Kenwood at a later time if necessary. Just need an improvement over factory at this time.

I saw that these units allow use of the steering wheel buttons. But how about the mic? Will bluetooth require a new one?

No you’ll have to mount the mic that came with the unit. The unit has been great. The only thing i didnt like was Netflix from the playstore didnt work. I had to side load it with a previous version. Otherwise its been holding up well. Another downer is the hotspot from my iPhone would always get dropped. Im using a Verizon mifi and it dosnt drop.
