SR5 is a very capable 4x4 truck and is plenty for the majority of average trail riders and medium off-roaders. If you need more than that, then the obvious choice is the OR. The SR5 doesn't get enough credit for what it is.

This is along the lines I’m thinking. It’s less about being cheap, than it is about “why buy factory upgrades when I’m gonna do them myself anyways?”

I've learned long ago if you want certain features for a vehicle, and the manufacture offers them let the manufacture install them. In the long run the truck should have more value when its time to sell it, or trade it. Anytime you add, no matter how many of your own features after to a vehicle thats been sold, its still only worth what it originally came as.

Assuming Toyota engineers are better at setting up off-road suspensions than you, I'd go with the OR then add any additional upgrades you desire.
Besides, at resale/trade-in time you will most likely do better recouping your overall costs with an OR than with a SR5 that you have modded the suspension.

Off-Road will have all the traction control stuff and e-lock rear diff. If you plan to be replacing the e-lock with air-lock then start with SR5, if you don’t plan for that then get the OR and have better capabilities. I got the OR because of the diff and the A-TRAC that only comes with the OR+MT. Can’t really retrofit that stuff easily.

You should make a $$ comparison between the "savings" and the cost of the "upgrades"

I doubt if you would be money ahead.

    Good luck.

I think you already know the answer to this since you had a 2009 off-road.

This is a good point. If you've owned an OR in the past and never used the crawl or locker, then that is probably your answer.

Also, doesn’t the Sport/OffRoad/Pro have a better entertainment system, or was that just on the 16’s when I was looking at them? I seem to recall the upper trim models had a larger screen and the SR5 had this old looking tiny thing.

I'm poor so I got the SR5 Destitute PRO. With a Diamondback SE cover and Carhart seatcovers. Everything I need is there (that's what I tell myself, YMMV).:D More money for guns, ammo and gas. Your priorities may be different

Yup. Identify what you need/want and buy for yourself. Other people tell you what they would buy for themselves, but no one knows you like you, so figure out what you need. You’ll be a lot happier in life when you buy stuff for yourself and not to make others happy.

Exactly. Extras will only be worth to someone if you sell 3rd party.

I will say, one of the things that sucks about my 2019 SR5 is that I bought new door speakers and had to return them because the SR5 head unit isn’t powerful enough to fully utilize those speakers. I would have had to buy an amp too. I don’t know if it’s different with the post 2020 models

On the other hand, I think I’d rather have my sun glasses holder than the crawl control unit

Truth is i'd rather have my sunglass holder to rather than 1/2 this electronic bs i never will use. I'd be even more happy with a real fm antenna to.

I got an SR5 V6 for 31.9K. I've already spent 4K+ on wheels and suspension. I didnt want to get an OR and still spend that and end up having a $45K tacoma.

    Plus i dont off-road.

The MTS is like the most misunderstood feature on the tacoma. People seem to get that the ATRAC is great but the MTS has all those features with the ability to choose how much slip the wheels allow based of the surface you select. It's like a poor man's simulated front locker. I use it alot, not sure why it's so unpopular here.

That’s the Sport owners rolling around with a fake hood scoop and their sunshades on at night.
