GM builds pickups without fuel economy modules due to chip shortage (msn.com)

"General Motors said it will build certain 2021 light-duty full-size pickups (5.3 Liter equipped models) without a fuel management module starting Monday until the end of the model year in late summer."

"But the result is those affected pickups will not achieve top fuel economy performance."

Gee...how much is that going to increase the cost of ownership over the life of the truck? And once that cost increase is calculated, are the dealers going to be reducing the purchase price by that much?

I can tell you that I have a GM vehicle with this active fuel management, a big, honking 6.0 liter G8GT gas hog that runs like a scalded dog, but if I can keep my foot out of it the car is capable of getting 24-27.1mpg due to active fuel management system. It's nice to be able to take this big comfortable 4-door grand tourer on a 2000 mile vacation because of its relatively excellent gas mileage for a V8. Some people hate AFM, but I love it. I would NOT purchase a Chevy truck if they told me it didn't have this system available.

That's awesome, that system sucks, and causes lots of wear to the pistons when they are not running. Something about gasoline being a lubricant in the upper cylinder.
To some I would guess these would be the desirable chevys

    Hmmmm.

Wonder what that will do to their Fleet MPG and if there will be a 'don't do that' response from the EPA?

I would certainly expect a Twitter outbreak from the Green team.

Even if production stops, a few will slip though and suddenly they will be Jay Leno level collectibles.

They will likely buy credits from another manufacturer. From the article it's not a big hit on thier corporate average.

Im guessing thy are having the same problem as ford by running out of computer chips GM stopped building the camaro because of chip shortages

    Imagine this next "pandemic"

No computer chips to build or replace ANYTHING from coffee makers to battleships wouldn't that be fun

My inner-child needs a spanking. I colored outside the lines and the Thought Police took notice. Strap the rat cage to my face.

UPDATE: Just saw on the news that GM is offering a $50 rebate to anyone that buys one of these vehicles. Only $50? My ass. The buying public ought to bend GM over and make it squeal like a pig to move any of these units. Let them rot on the lot.

It was a reference to George Orwell's book, 1984. Written in '49, read it in '69, so I guess the reference is no longer relevant to anyone under the age of...age of...oh, never fuckin' mind...

And YES, back in the day, they were AWESOME. Yer' grandparents partied harder than you ever will sonny!

I believe that was more of an issue with early AFM systems.
