2017 TRD Sport, stock alum rims.

In a situation where I live in a city, drive highway, but have property that is very unimproved.

On my property this weekend i had 12” of snow and ice/mud under that. Abandoned roads and woods trails to get to a camp.

Realistically this means 99% on highway/city slab, 1% slushy, steep, deep mud & wet leaves.

    Very seriously considering 265/70/17 ST/MAXX.

    Any other thoughts?

ST MAXX have been great tires for me. I run a winter set half the year though because we get real winter up here. The ST MAXX will be fine for off-road snow and ice since there's really no speed involved there. On road I wouldn't trust them to be great in winter conditions. If you won't be seeing on-road winter conditions then they could be a great tire for you.

Really STT is overkill. Any all terrain can easily handle that, preferably a 10 ply for the rough roads.

I'd much rather have a quieter tire for the 99% of driving. The STT's dont have great road manors, they suck on ice so they are a big no for me personally.

Toyo AT3, Nitto TerraGrapplers, Yoko g015, Falken Wildpeak, Cooper AT3, BFG KO2, etc etc etc. will serve you well for that.

I actually find them to be great on road in the snow. They don't spin unless I really try and braking performance is great.

They're definitely better than the all seasons I've run in the past on snow on road.

OP is talking about ST MAXX which is a hybrid tire. The STT Pro you're talking about is a full on mud terrain tire.

Wonder if the snow you’re getting in California is different than what we get here in the Midwest. Once the temp drops below zero the rubber gets too hard to get any real grip on slushy icy stuff out here and it can be dangerous. The “softer” rubber and extra siping of winter tires helps a ton on-road.

It's probably different. It rarely goes below zero. That's probably why we have different experiences.

All I know is that the St Maxx's definitely do better than a standard all season on road where I am.

The real question is what's a tire that will both handle the conditions you describe on road, but still have the capability to go through really thick snow off road?

There is a rather boring looking tire that just might be the practical ticket for your needs. The Yokohama GO15. I really did not want to buy such a boring looking tire for my truck. But I was convinced by a few members here on TW to give them a try. So far they have performed VERY well in a wide variety of conditions, including your needs, which are "slushy, steep, deep mud & wet leaves" and 99% on road.

Yeah - thats teh problem Im getting at.

This is the first I'm hearing of the ST MAXX not being great in colder variable conditions on-road.

Suggest to get the typical 100% road use tire. Then a set of chains for getting to the camp.

Doesn't sound like you go to camp everyday and the camp road has those conditions sporadically.

The siping and softer rubber isn’t there compared to a winter tire. It’s not that you can’t run them, but compared to my Blizzaks I’m not going anywhere below freezing with my ST Maxx’s because the weather is too unpredictable up here. Specifically slushy slippery icy bullshit is the issue. Big thick fluffy snow and they’ll eat it right up like a mud tire.
