I changed the air freshener to a new one, one time.
I’ve been tossing around the idea of changing my carrier bearing in a clunk hunt of the century. Mine looks fatigued but not torn or destroyed. I read about the iedls poly carrier people were using from a Ford ranger(don’t quote me) and also the cheaper spicer “genuine” Toyota carrier on Amazon. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the poly?

also mine has about 1/2 of movement and the bearing can move independently from the rubber. The rubber isn’t sealed around the bearing completely.

I just can’t decide which route I wanna take. I want something sturdy and will last. So idk if I should just try out the spicer and see and upgrade later or not.

Spicer should last quite a long while since most oem bearings are head and shoulders better than any other cheap import ones. Your pinion angle definitely will change with the lower mounting position of the poly cb.

The rubber surrounding the bearing allows it to move a bit forward and backward as your rear axle moves up and down.

My 63 Pontiac (same suspension as 58-64 Impala) has the 2 piece driveshaft as well and a poly bearing will break down with that axle movement. When adding a poly bearing,,The low rider people add a slip yoke on the rear end to allow for the axle movement when they go high and low.

I’d suggest staying with the stock bearing, they seem to last a very long time on the Tacoma. When you get a new one, check the welding on the parts to see it is strongly welded and the metal is aligned correctly. Even spicer have made some crap bearings. On the 63, I’ve had to order 3 to get a good one.

I have a slip yoke on my axle which would allow me to use the poly. The guys on here are saying the poly won’t work with the prerunners as they don’t have the yoke. I ordered the spicer last night as mine has a lot of play that I’m not entirely happy with so I’ll report back with the results of the new one! If this goes then I’ll swoop on the poly one and go from there. Thanks for the help everyone!

I have this in my tool box, I should install it and see if it works better than the OEM style shit.

Straight aluminium to bearing? No insulation or poly?

The isolation is at the mounts via the rubber(poly) bushing mounts.

If the IEDLS Poly Carrier is the same size ID as stock it's defiantly a better bolt in solution.

Sticking to OE is one of the worst suggestions ever as they are garbage right out of the box.

They are. I'm still on my first one, it has lasted me a very very long time and I've been really hard on it too. I have a spare on standby just in case it ever does want to give up though.

Of course. I'm the one who assembled a group buy for it long ago and made what has turned into the megathread for it to turn it into a more well known mod on here.

You would have to check the shaft OD/ ID values and compare them to the IEDLS bearing values to make sure they match. I couldn't tell you yes or no.

My OE 2002 model is original after 19 years, what’s wrong with that?
