Door seal size?

I need to replace the door seal aka weatherstrip. When I put make/model/etc. into ebay or Amazon it brings up both 5mm & 6mm as a match. Now one could say, "What's a mm dif matter?" Well, apparently enough that both 5mm & 6mm are available. Maybe it's just another of those minor details I get hung up on, however just in case, does anyone know what the correct size would be for an '01?

Also, any specifics on the door "orverhang" strip? Type? Size? Having a harder time getting aftermarket search results. That one seems in there a little more snug so I didn't wanna pull it out to inspect it. Figured I'd have a durned time trying to get it back in place....

 

I replaced my drivers door weather stripping(big rubber seal), but I went with OEM Toyota part.yes it was expensive, but it
fit perfect. you could always put your vin number in a toyota website like McGeorge and see what size it says. hope that makes
a little sense. How's the truck running now, is it treating you right.

 

That's one of the frustrations about Toyota dealer sites. They don’t give up dimensions, descriptions. Thank you though. Guess i’ll just pick a size & since the claim is it fits my truck, if it doesn’t, I should be covered.

Hey Kristi, did you ever get around to replacing your door seal? I know oem is probably best, but I'm having a hard time justifying the nearly $300 it would take to replace both of mine. If you did complete the job, could you tell me what you used, and if you're happy with it? Thanks in advance, - Ras

 

Curious....besides an obvious tear, how do you know it's time to replace it?

 

If it works fine, I'd leave it alone. If you have water or moisture getting in, or you're excessive outside noise, I'd inspect yours. Mine are absolutely thrashed though, tears in both sides.

 

I think I managed to hunt down some compatible seals. I have repeatedly looked at them, gotten confused about size & went onto something else shiny. Hopefully I still have them amongst my ridiculous amount of open tabs on the computer cuz it would suck to have to find them again, especially the outer most seal. Anyway, I'll post what I thought might work & maybe we can figure it out betwixt the two of us.

I found some from local scrap yards for less than $50. The driver's side is usually torn but passenger side seals are usually in decent shape and fit exactly the same.

I’m generally not opposed to getting some off junkyard cars or part outs but I figured there’s got to be an option somewhere in between beautiful new/expensive/oem and beaten old/inexpensive/oem. I’m going to do some research as well and i’ll let you know. Might be tomorrow.

 

I think one of them is like this. I was very surprised when I didn't see any posts about this on here given what Toyota charges for it.

We went with the junkyard seals but it took me years to find a 2 door Tacoma in the yard. They were pretty meaty, But I can’t say if it was 5mm or 6mm. I would guess the larger if you end up buying them.

I took some pics of the seal that's on the truck so I could use it as reference while looking on line. Darned if I know what folder they are in & I was using them not long ago, like last week. Anyway, I thought I had narrowed the other seal down, but now I'm not sure cuz I don't have the pic. See what I can do tomorrow, or rather later today, I'm glad to have you working on this as well, I kept getting stuck & shelving it. Thank you!

 

Best I can tell, there are no universal types that fit the profile. Some would probably work, but it wouldn't cover the seam between the door sill and the headliner. I'll post a drawing of what the cross-section looks like.



I did notice that the OEM 2nd gen seals are a third of the price, and seem to be very similar. I'm going to ask my neighbor if I can take a look and measure the seal on his 2nd gen. If it looks like its close enough to be adapted, I'll probably buy one and see if I can make it work. If i do, I'll update here.

 

Update: there might be a universal after all. However, looks pretty pricey anyway so I'm still going to pursue the 2nd gen idea when i get a chance.

Your best bet to find a similar cross section is to look at other Toyota models built in the same years. The door weatherstrips are extruded parts. If a supplier can just extrude different lengths for diff models, and cut and fuse them for different vehicles, that's a really good thing. So, designers will try to commonize the cross section when possible to lower part costs to Toyota.

To get the correct length, you might end up using two weatherstrips from a vehicle with a smaller door opening. But having a joint in say one of the vertical sections, would not be so bad. Silicone caulk could be used to join them together.

 

Kristi, if you are still in western MA there is a small place in Hartland VT called Indian Spring Auto. It’s a Tacoma boneyard and he’s got tons of new OEM stuff. His name is Dennis, he’s open Saturdays. He will have what you need. Bring cash....

 

Y’all, I just ordered the weatherstripping below to test it out. I’ll follow up when I install it to see if it’s a suitable replacement.

Silicone caulk is a poor adhesive. Don’t use that for this.

Try cyanoacrylate superglue — that can work beautifully.
