    I need to get back using my 17' canoe, and would like to get a rack.

    I have seen the TracRacs around, almost too nice for just hauling a canoe on short distances, 3-10 miles max, on local roads.

    What options with TracRac, like a base model(s)?

    What about other, non-premium, simple rack offerings?

    Note: I have the HF extender I use for a kayak, but I would prefer the 17-ft length up on a rack.

    EDIT: darn, Thule bought Tracrac it looks like, and cha-ching.. much higher prices!

    U might be able to flip the extender up to use it in conjunction with some pool noodles and ratchet straps to load the canoe on your roof
    Something like this (I mounted a Yakima crossbar on the cab but pool noodles would be fine for short hauls)F8008918-2A6E-4529-B14E-D75BE999C4DF.jpg

    Rola makes some cheaper racks that are similar style to trac racs. If you keep your eyes peeled the trac racs pop up on Craigslist and marketplace for decent prices

    I have a similar set up that truchador's picture shows - the rear piece is a Cabela's attachment that actually pivots at the top. You can lift one end of the canoe up and strap it on then lift the other end off the ground and swing it around and up to the roof rack.....a ONE PERSON job loading/unloading a canoe. Used it on my Tundra frequently, but not on my Tacoma yet. Canoe is my son's so once he takes it, I will give him the Cabela's rack too.

    Well, I once had the idea of making 2x4 uprights for front of the bed, using an old round Thule cross bar.
    Easy to attach the the channel rails with L brackets, and secure the U bolt at bottom.
    The 2x4 uprights sat in the garage, time to get them out!

    Then, at rear, I can use the HF hitch mount extender upright, like truchador's and others, same style, maybe not as well made, but should fit my needs, with good tie-downs.

    We use a Prinsu;
    Super stable, used with a Malone gunwhale kit, and no overhang off the back so we can still tow the RV.

    I put rhino ditch tracks on the cab so my front thule bar can go on the cab roof for longer items.

    If the canoe weighs 100 lbs or less, just get Toyota OEM roof racks

    Finding a used one is a good bet to stay on a budget. Anything new for our trucks is very overpriced.

    I went with a custom bed rack through a metal fabricator and then found some Craigslist Thule crossbars to carry our 17’. I was pleasantly surprised how much cheaper a custom rack was and was able to add some specific dimensions that worked out with a canoe too.
