Who here has installed one of these cages? I know that Adam is a member here but just curious if anyone here has any first hand experience installing it in a double cab second Gen. I’ve got one on order and should have it in a few weeks.

The truck is BUILT and I do some fairly intense rock crawling and trips around large canyons and shit like that out west several times a year and I wheel with my son. So safety is is paramount for me wanting to make sure if I did something stupid we would survive. Any tips or advice for installing it? Obviously everything on the interior will come out and I’ll cut some fun holes in places but I’ve found very few if any pics online other than Adam at 4xinnovations pics.

Once I get the cage I plan on a full build breakdown and we will do a YouTube video on the cage install

    It is

Sooo.... the cage really doesnt fit well out of the box, to the point where it would be nearly as quick to make one from scratch - which would also make it tighter to the headliner. I'd be more then happy to help you out with photos.

The other big drawback is there is no x in the cage to create true serious stability. Also, theres no harness bar.

Last, the taco interior is so small you'll need harnesses and seats to keep you from getting slapped up against the bars in the occurrence of an accident.

Is this the “bolt” together version he used to sell?

    Also,
He does make a harness bar, and the dash bar all separate which is ideal to me as I’m not adding harnesses immediately as they aren’t the most comfortable on long trips

Yes and no. Basically the bolt in kit it was the weld together kit but with couplings included. All the tubes had to be cut to make it bolt in. Which they had to be cut anyway to make them work even in the weld in configuration. For example the bar at the top of the windshield sat about 4" lower then it does currently. We had to cut to move it up.

The low head room in the taco presents a lot of challenges when trying to keep the headliner. No adult will be able to sit in the back safely. Their head will be between bars. Same for the front seats. If you're over 6' or aren't harnessed you could slap your head on the bar above the door opening.

Also keep in mind the side curtain airbags could deflect off the bar at your head if they were to deploy

It really is a thing where you do it, or you dont. My air bags are disable and i only wear the 4 point and no one sits in the back.

In my opinion, if you want a cage just have one custom fit to your truck. The feedback from piper motorsports and rollys customs were that it would have been the same amount of work. Also, take the liner out, have them cage as close to the roof as possible and find another solution for a headliner. Also, remove the side curtain bags and install emulators so the system doesnt show a fault and the dash and wheel bags will deploy if needed.

Dude solid feedback. I appreciate that.

I am welding this in myself and ordered the weld together kit so the bar height and all will be set comfortable for me. I am assuming I will have to do some custom work to make it fit my 6’3” frame.

I have a bender and all at the house but was and still thinking this is a good starting point for me to build something that suits my needs. We shall see!

If only it were mine! It's just the nicest one I've seen on here so I had to share. They're doing what Nick suggested which was to have a custom headliner made to totally hide it. Even at the A pillar.
