    Hey guys! First post!!

I have a 2005 Tacoma TRD 4 x 4. Having some issues with ABS. Scanner said RR sensor not communicating. Replaced it. Didn't fix it. Took truck to Toyota. They replaced RR sensor and didn't fix the problem. They then said that the ABS module needs to be replaced, but they wanted $1,560.00 to fix it. NOPE!!

Drove two states away and found a used ABS module and pump, that was tested and was good. Well, we only replaced the electronic portion, since the brakes appear to work well. Doesn't seem that the pump would be bad. Well, as soon as we started the truck, the ABS and brake light went out on the dash. (without clearing the codes in the computer) But, as soon as we drove it for 15 feet, the lights came back on. Went to autozone and their scanner said that the fr, fl, and rr sensors are failing.......

WTF??? He cleared the codes and ABS lights went out. Then, rolling again, ABS light back on. One thing the guy at autozone said was, if you put in new sensors, you have to have the truck re-coded. Is that true? Any idea's guys? I'd reallly like to fix this.

I don't have the answer but I'll add that I broke the drivers side rear abs sensor. Bought a new sensor from toyota "expensive" and installed it. The first time I hit the brakes the ABS light went out and it has not come back on after several thousand miles.

I just pulled the bulb out of the dash lol solved my issue.

    Ps
I destroyed a sensor and the wiring wheeling. Since my truck is manual it didn't affect my gauges

My abs light came on as well and I had it checked at the dealer since I was there for something else as well...(was a little concerned as i had heard the “abs noise” while braking once or twice earlier that day) the dealer initially said my whole wiring harness was toast saying I needed a new one for 3k. I said no f*cking way and they said they had to check a few more things...then changed their tune saying that “something happened when they cleared the code” and now the truck is “unsafe to drive”
.... I’m now in a 2018 loaner and just got a call with them saying something about how the right front sensor was toast, saying something about my cv as well (hard to understand via the phone will have them explain it when I pick it up) they said the truck is now safer to drive but noted that the fix would be 1500$....

    Any advice?

Have you just been running your truck without abs? I think I have the same truck as you (almost)

I have a buddy that installed an abs shutoff switch and we tested braking distances this winter in the snow...my truck always slid further with abs than his with it disabled...

I have been without abs for 2 years. Just remember it's not going to stop on a dime they stop but I left mine because my truck is more trail pig than daily.

ABS is not safe in the dirt.. and well I race motorcycles so ABS is worthless to me.

Yup, Its easy to blame the truck for locking up.. you do realize you're in full control of the brakes and can unlock them by releasing pressure on the pedal.

I took my foot off the brake the system kept going off. We figured the sensor froze and caused a malfunction.. at any rate with the system disabled ive never had an issue since when snow wheeling or otherwise.

ABS doesnt lock, it unlocks. The purpose is to be able to control (steer) the vehicle, which is nigh impossible when the wheels are locked.

Why? Because tires only have 100% traction. If all their energy is spent stopping, there is nothing to steer with.

The non ABS racing analogy is termed braking modulation, or pedal modulation, that you do with your foot.

Ive run with a few hot shoes in the past, and they were very good. But still not as quick as an ABS computer.

I do agree though, dirt is another deal than pavement.

So my ABS and Brake lights are on. Pulled code, says rear left speed sensor. Put in new sensor, reset abs, lights still on. Shop says wheel bearings. Put in new wheel bearings...light still on. Try another wheel sensor. Light still on. Shop figures it is in fact a problem with the ABS Control Module. I cannot find any information anywhere about anyone having similar wheel speed sensor issues being caused by a faulty ABS module. Ordered one on ebay. Hoping it fixes it. I don't want to have to replace the entire pump so I'm planning on swapping just the parts-number matching module. Anyone ever does this?

Well this sounds extremely scummy. Any shop willing to sell you wheel bearings for an ABS light is probably out to get you. I would make sure you inspect all wiring and connectors. It sounds like you have the same issue as OP who did not fix it with a new module.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Would be nice to hear if you ever resolved this and how you did it. I'm having the same issue!

Sorry, OP has only 1 post and last logged in on the same day they joined. Maybe that means they got it fixed. This is why it's nice when people post updates along the way and afterwards.

You do know that the magnetic band that operates the ABS Sensor for the wheel rotation is part of the bearing in second generation Tacoma's right?
And if the bearing is defective and shedding metal particles it will effect the interaction between the magnetic band and sensor right?

End result a damaged wheel bearing can and often does cause an ABS Fault.
