Ughhhhh....see I'm actually over the whole pay cut thing because the job sounds so cool, but the one thing I keep having a difficult time with is coming to terms with living in the fucking desert. I just don't know if I can do it.

Then I think about getting to ride copilot in F/18s, F/15s and F/16s and it all goes away

Yeah he listed it here a few weeks ago for $15k and had a pretty lengthy description of the good and bad things.

See, as a fellow owner of a truck that has seen some shit off the paved road and also rattles, squeaks and clunks whenever it feels like it, $15 - 17k seems like an awful lot to ask. But he has done some nice work to it

I would definitely have a hard time buying a built truck that’s used

Could be tough figuring out, but sometimes it isn't until you make that change that you find out what it is you really want.

It's like hitting the reset button, and suddenly you find a new "you"

I don't think anyone has good memories attached to Barstow, but that one esp does not sound like fun lol.

yeah there are a few options for living 'closer' to there that aren't so bad as Barstow or Lancaster.

Tehachapi is kind of one, only because they actually have seasons being at 4k feet. But it's still a methy looking high desert town.

Bear Valley Springs is more in the southern Sierra and is a 1hour commute which looks a lot better

If it was just me I would suck it up and live close by even if it was the desert, just for a couple years or so. But with my wife and daughter I esp don't want my daughter growing up in the desert lol.

I'm spoiled now because I work less than 10 - 15 minutes from home, get off at 5 and I'm home by 5:15pm. Wake up at 8:30 (haven't gotten to do that in a long time) and I'm at work by 9am.

For an actual commute, I would need to get a commuter...the salary they are offering would go entirely into my truck's gas tank if I had to drive 2 hours a day each day in it

Yep.. I ordered that antenna and SWR from the video to do just that. I actually need an SWR to check out the big bumper mount antenna. It took a couple of days for my license to process.

I bought one of the foldable antennas. I haven't been able to talk to anyone yet. No repeaters in my area to pick up. Listening to the NOAA channel cleared up with that big antenna. After watching the video, I don't want to run it too much until I know the SWR is right.

If I could go back to riding trains for commuting to work I would in a heartbeat. Get extra sleep before and after work or read and relax.

At the very least for getting around the base

I saw a show recently about the jetpack and its history...apparently 50 - 60 years ago they tried really hard to make it work but the reality of it requiring too much fuel/fuel being too heavy just couldn't be worked around.

You've never ridden on a socal commuter train I take it lol

I take that back, it's not that bad depending on where. Outside of LA there is the Metrolink train system which is nice. But the train/subway system around LA is awful

Used to take it to Kings games several years ago so we could get dumb drunk at the game and afterward, then pass out on the train home. Slept through my stop a few times lol.
