I've been watching a lot of westerns as of late. Partly because there are bunch free to watch on Amazon prime, and then I also bought a bunch recently. Every thing from classics to modern day.

    My personal favorites:
    Dollars trilogy
    Tombstone
    Open Range
    Unforgiven
    Maverick
    Hondo
    hostiles
Young guns 1 & 2 (I guess I'm only person in the world who likes these films, must be a gen x thing)
    outlaw josie wales
    The shootist

Ones I thought were fine, but I found them to be overrated:
    The magnificent 7 (1960)
Once upon a time in the west (classic Sergio but I feel 30- 45 minutes could have been cut out).
    The searchers
    Silverado
    True grit (2010)
    The wild bunch

Some I have yet to see, or planning to see:
    High plains drifter
    pale rider
    Rio Bravo
Butch cassidey and the sundance kid
    assasination of jesse james
    stagecoach
    High Noon
    Django
    Shane

Not really a fan of westerns but there are a few I do like

    Outlaw Josey Wales
    Tombstone
    Quigley Down Under

That's about all I can think of that I like.

Most Spaghetti Westerns are overrated. The Searchers is one of the best of all time. High Noon is another imho. Shane and Butch Cassidy are both way up there. I also recommend Rio Bravo, but not El Dorado, which is pretty much the same movie, but crappier.

Try the John Ford / John Wayne cavalry trilogy

    Fort Apache
    She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
    Rio Grande

    Also more John Wayne

    The Horse Soldiers
    True Grit (the real version)

    Also:

    Lonesome Dove

The Searchers is considered by many to be the best movie ever made period. It is based on a compilation of several real events. There are several instances of Indians kidnapping young girls to raise as their own who had family members search for them for years before recovering them.

Other good choices. Really too many good ones. Ask me another day and my list might be somewhat different.

    High Noon
    Along Came Jones
    The Ox-Bow Incident
    Red River (Original 1948 version)

While I liked John Wayne a lot, the 2010 version of True Grit was closer to the book and simply a better movie. They did it right.

And if your a Wayne fan you can't watch the Shootist and not get at least a little bit emotional seeing the Duke dying from cancer on screen in his last movie while dying of cancer in real life.

I like a lot of Eastwood movies, but can't really get into the Spaghetti Westerns. Outlaw Josie Wells and Unforgiven are 2 good ones. I still like him as Rowdy Yates in the Rawhide TV show.

Dances with Wolves, not to be confused with Wolverine

Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day-Lewis version, more of an eastern but lots of indigenous peoples)

It's not a western in a traditional sense, but I really enjoyed Sukiyaki Western Django.

A little of this and a little of that.
Both of the ‘3:10 to Yuma’ films are good. The first was made in 1957 and had Glenn Ford and Van Heflin as the stars. The second was made in 2007 and has Russell Crowe and Christian Bale as the stars.

John Wayne, Glenn Ford, Jimmy Stewart, Randolph Scott, Henry Fonda, Gary Cooper, all made good Western movies over the years.

I don't think anyone mentioned the John Wayne film 'The Cowboys'. One of my favorites.

Grit channel is obsessed with Audie Murphy... never liked any of them

For giggles try 1979's The Villian with Schwarzenegger. :D

Also 1995's The Quick and the Dead, a good cast and great editing.
