Those with Manual Transmission...why?

Thanks, going to test drive the 20 tomorrow. I've driven some Gen 3's before and agree that the interior is sorted out much better, and if going with the AT, the shifter design is far better. Also liked the park brake location, where it should be especially when you are on a boat ramp. I use 4wd both high and low on ramps, and with my old gen 1 manual, 4 wd locks it in place on the ramp even if the park brake is sketchy. Some places I haul boats I need low range to climb a berm after hooking on.

I see you've already decided to test drive the '20, but I figured I'd give you another data point: I came from a V8 4Runner and do not find anything lacking in my '21.

The only other thing I would say is contingent upon the price, but when I was looking at Tacomas in October to ultimately December when I bought mine, the price of a brand new Tacoma was right on par with a 2019. I actually bought my '21 with 1 mile for less than a local dealership was asking for a '19 with 30k miles - same trim. I never had any intention of buying a new vehicle at any time in my life, but it just made sense the way this instance worked out. Something to think about.

I got a manual so when I'm at the circuit track railing a sweeper in 4th gear at full tilt it doesn't downshift on it's own and break the rear end loose sending me into a wall. But really I drive mountain roads a lot and autos annoy me

 

I just really enjoy driving and being in complete control of my vehicle. I love using the clutch and rowing through the gears. Also, I always get annoyed when I drive automatics because they never seem to be in the right gear. Even the best autos, like the DSG, 8 speed ZF, etc don't satisfy me.
The availability of a manual with 4x4 is actually 90% of the reason I went with a Tacoma over a Silverado, Colorado, or F150.

 

Clutch replacement cheaper than transmission replacement, can control when vehicle shifts, better fidelity in off-road experience, snow conditions experience and went conditions imop, it’s incredibly boring to drive an automatic.
I have had both in the past.

 

Never owned an auto. Not driving an one until I medically have to, and a pillow over the face may fix that too. lol

 

Learned on a MT and never went back. I've always hated how ATs are never in the right gear and take so long to figure out you're trying to go fast. I also hate that they have a mind of their own. I love the control, the better gas milage, and the ability to take off without having to wait. Also it makes driving so much more fun. (For some reason I like driving a MT with congestion, as long as its moving so thats not even a negative for me.)

 

Manual is old tech. You cavemen need to embrace the future.

If you need a reason to drive a manual, look at the massive number of threads on tuning to make it go faster or "my truck is too slow" here. Toyota must have programmed the auto for fuel economy, because the auto I test drove was infuriatingly slow and really just plain dim witted. It felt like driving a 100HP vehicle with 50 pounds of torque. Just plain terrible.

The V6 is not a speed demon by any means, but being able to shift at redline in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th makes this truck peppy enough for most highway situation without messing with tuning and what have you.

I will say that the accumulator is annoying and should be removed on the day of delivery.

 

Very Simple... I enjoy driving a manual. If I can not have a high horsepower engine, I also go manual.

 

Are y’all seeing a 1mpg difference with the manual compared to the auto in the real world? I know the epa estimated difference is 1mpg but I always wondered if that was true in real world driving or not.

 

I get 13ish, my wife gets 15ish.

It's nowhere near the combined 19 unless you drive it like Toyota tuned automatic.

 

My manual's mileage (so far) is BETTER than the EPA estimate for the Auto... (with Sliders and 265 75s). - I know it is the opposite per the documentation... but this is real world. Other have reported the same...

On my last climb up the mountains I got 16+. This is from the flat to the top only (All uphill).

 

Mileage more depends on how it's driven, IMO. I get 15-16mpg usually, have seen 23 indicated cruising at about 70mph on the highway. But if I'm not cruising on the highway, I'm driving it how it feels like it want to be driven, which is usually winding out the gears a bit, so I'm not exactly driving to maximize economy. If that was my priority I'd be driving something else.

 

Manual is always better.

People like to say you don't need manual in Hellcat because powah. Well IMO they are wrong.

After a few minutes 707HP got boring when you realize you are just along for the ride. Also in the case of Hellcat auto removes most of the glorious backfires. In my old hellcat you lift in first, second, and third and it backfires just so beautifully.

As far as traffic goes, just pay slight bit of attention and leave a small gap and I haven't had a manual that can't crawl without having to clutch in every 2 seconds. Beats foot on brakes the entire time in traffic.
