A few years back I was in a parking garage and had to go up a steep ramp that was wet and slippery. I couldn’t get up in 2w so I applied 4w. Everything was fine till I reached the top and had to make a sharp turn

(Before I knew about 4w drive rules) The truck didn’t want to turn and move forward. I could move if I straighten the wheel but that would be driving into a wall. I tried to disengage the 4w drive but it didn’t want to turn off and the truck started to yell at me. I was forced to turn 4w back on slowly creep on the turn. Eventually the truck made a loud metal clap sound and the driver rear end got tossed 1/2ft in the air. Then I was able to safely turn off 4w drive.

I never had problems after that and I did some reading on how 4w drive works. But I’ve always wondered what that loud metal clap sound was. If something did break what would it had been?

Have u tried using since ? Try it on a dirt road and it will tell you if something broke . Sounds like the clunk you heard is the drivetrain unbinding itself .

If it was wet and slippery that shouldn't happen, but it can. Find a slippery spot near home and try again, take some turns and engage 4Lo. Just make sure you're fully stopped and in neutral when you try the low.

It should be fine though, that experience is not enough to cause any damage unless you've been doing this for quite sometime. And even then.

You “crow hopped”. It is fine unless you do it excessively.

Yes, I took it to the dealership afterwards and had them inspect it. I was worried about secondary damage. They told me there was no damage but I haven’t been able to actually use it on dirt.

Ask the dealer what oil they filled the front diff with. Or maybe you already have a record of what was done.

There could still be a problem next time you try to engage 4x4...especially if the front diff wasn’t inspected.

OP that was FEW years ago and you haven't engaged 4wd since then right. You should have bought the 2wd. Per toyota manual, 4wd should be engaged once a month to keep it working

Ahh gese, I’m still learning stuff. Hopefully someone at The dealership was checking that during my 6mo services. I’m really bringing all this stuff up because I’m about to do my 36k mile check on my own. Up to now I’ve been using the dealership and the free stuff.
I’ve seen a few YouTube videos showing what needs to be checked but I wanna make sure I don’t miss anything.

being Active duty I’ve only been stationed in big cities where I gotta go out of my way to find a good dirt spot. I got the 4w cause I was expecting to be stuck somewhere away from people.

You could find a dirt road and exercise 4WD (driving straight) and making sure everything works.

Go for a drive on a nice slow back road and try engage 4Hi at a slower speed. If it works then youre good. Go back to 2Hi and youre all set.

That loud metal sound was the system un-binding as the T-case went back into 2WD mode and de-coupled the front diff from the rear diff. If youre coming up on 36k miles it would be a great time to flush all the gear oils out of the front diff, rear diff, and T-case. Believe the book says every 30k for that
