Other Uses For Spare Tire Area? Let's See What You Got!

Oh man, I would actually love to have something like this. Yeah, this is exactly what I'm envisioning. I think that would be a good spot to keep some extra tools and parts and such. Some u-bolts, lug nuts, tool roll with wrenches, BF Hammer, etc.

 

Thanks man, only downfall is that you have to have some serious cohones to get the battery up in there, or drop the hitch and just lift it into place with a floor jack. Other than that, love having it out of the way. Ran all my wiring for my solar panel and battery cables up thru the cubby and into the bed to my aux fuse block

 

Have you done this? I was thinking about keeping a second battery to supply my micro camper with battery power

 

I'm looking into a second battery that would be used exclusively by the camper/micro RV. Now storing the battery in the bed would be almost out of the question due to the bed drawers I'm finishing up so I was thinking about alternate locations.

One that was suggested was using my spare tire plate underneath as a cage so I could keep the battery fumes out of the living space, but it would also be protected from all the terrain difficulties. The system would be solar generated to keep the battery charged.

I've seen @BassAckwards set up and that's the route I'm thinking except using the spare tire chain to raise and lower the cage, has anyone else ever done this?

Yes, this would be awesome! but with a way to lower the whole thing from the bottom too so you don’t need to lift up the truck bed when it’s full of camping gear y’all have got me thinking..

 

What happens if you go through water? Does that cause any issues? The battery in the engine bay is up pretty high. I always assumed it was to keep it from getting wet. I'm not talking spray more about partially/fully submerged.

 

You might think water would be a problem for car batteries but it’s actually not. Water is bad for tiny electronic circuitry because (almost) all water contains conductive minerals/salts, and when the water dries these minerals are left behind and creates shorts in the tiny circuitry.

With the gauge and size of components in cars and trucks it’s no issue at all. Corrosion would be the only concern, but really no worse than in the engine bay, assuming it gets time to dry fully between submersions.

I never had any issues and i ran it like this for a while, but i didn't ever submerge the battery. It is a sealed unit though, so im not sure it would be an issue if it was

Genius idea, but I'm not ballin' hard enough to spend that much for those.

 

It's been a while back, but one of my wife's brothers bought a gas tank from a scrapyard with the fuel filler that came out behind the rear tag. Those were fairly common back in the day. The tag mount was spring loaded and you pulled it down to get to the filler.

He mounted it where the spare went on a 1989 F150, cut a hole in the bumper behind the tag and used the spring loaded tag mount off an older car too. He rigged up a fuel pump to transfer fuel from the secondary tank into the primary tank while he was driving. He spent very little money.

 

You can put your weed in it! It’s a “fuel tank”.

 

My idea recently was to have a weighted tire you could put under there in the winter to replace your spare. Maybe a couple hundred pounds or so. But I think you'd have to upgrade the mechanism to withstand the weight, so I gave up on that thought. Would just be nice to increase traction in the winter without having to utilize the most functional part of the bed (from between the wheel wells to the tailgate) with sand bags or whatnot.

It would also get you to move your spare from underneath where it can get frozen in over winter.

 

I went this route it's bigger than the pics look this was before it was riveted and screwed in....
It easily holds a spare cv, tools, oil & etc...
