Sell Tacoma buy a 4Runner

Has anyone done this? Looking for a car my wife can drive. Also problems getting in and out of the truck.
I owned a Blazer before I purchased my 19 Tacoma. I would also like to know what a fair price for the Runner, I like the green color so looks like a SR5.
Just like to hear some feedback, Thank You

I own a 2020 Trd 4Runner I paid 35500 before taxes. I bought a 2021 Trd Tacoma last week. The 4Runner seems to be higher quality fit and finish. 4Runner had a lot more room for passengers. Just have to ask yourself are you going to miss the bed of a truck?

I also posted on the 4 Runner forum, I never drove one but they are good looking.( without that crazy looking basket on top). I want that gone

 

We have both. Both are nice, but we definitely use the Tacoma far more.

 

Does that basket come off? Don’t mind the roof rack but the basket must go

 

I have owned first a 2020 TRD Offroad Tacoma. Then traded to a 2020 TRD Offroad 4Runner. And now back to a 2020 TRD Pro Tacoma. yes I have issues with making up my mind. I am looking at a 2021 4Runner Pro now. Anyways, the 4Runner definitely has better room. Not a lot as far as passengers is concerned, but enough. I always bang my head getting in the Tacomas and I am only 5'8. There is a "little" more back seat room in the 4R as well. But it gives up under seat storage. And you have the enclosed cargo in a 4R as well. So room is dependent on what you need room for. I think the seating position is better on the 4R as well. That is a common opinion as far as Taco's go. They just have a weird seating position. And this is a weird one that I don't see too many mention. Cupholders, they suck on the Taco's. yes there are a ton of them. But they don't fit 1 liter soda bottles (which is what I mostly get). In the 4R you can take out the cupholder insert and fit a wider drink perfectly. Can't do that in a Taco. I know that is nit picky. But it is the thing that bothers me most for day to day livability. I am a tech and drive a service van daily so the Taco or whatever vehicle I personally own does not get driven every day. Anyways, if you are larger or just want a more comfortable driving space, I feel the 4R is definitely better. And the trunk area is very nice. A lot of it comes down to wanting or needing a suv or truck. If you do not need the bed normally and can swing a bit more $ for the 4R, I think it is a better daily use vehicle. You can food shop with passengers and not have to put the groceries in the bed, etc. Just have to think out your daily scenarios. 5th gen 4Runners are everywhere around here (north east). So still a very very popular platform. Taco's are everywhere as well. So both are very popular for a reason. Toss up there. Both will hold value very well. I just think the 4R is a better daily vehicle "if" you need some room for a few people and or carrying groceries or like to keep some tools or stuff in the back. I know you can get a cap or truck box for the taco. But if you like to get a few bags of groceries in a Taco and have a wife or husband with you and a kid or two, then you need to put stuff in the back. And in a truck the bags will roll around and all. This is obviously hitting on daily use things and not wheeling or overlanding. just thoughts of living with both vehicles. Where these points come in to play most every time you drive the truck. And not what matters as far as a base for your overlanding or wheeling rig.

The Runners suffer from quality control because of made-in-Japan. If they ever make one in North America, I would buy one.

I'm not sure how the 4R is going to be easier to get in and out of. As far as easier to drive... it might be a bit shorter, I guess?

 

That's very pixilated. I was just trying to see if you meant what I was thinking of or if you meant the TRD Pro rack. Both come off. Most don't actually come with the basket in the first place. I believe it's aftermarket. Either way, ours didn't have one and it is removable

 

Baskets only come on trail edition and TRD pros. Most of them will not have the basket stock. They do come off.

I traded a 4runner in on my Tacoma. Looking back I kinda wish I'd just kept the T4R (it was paid off) and had a higher payment on the Taco.

I think the 4runner does have better fit and finish overall. Personally, I prefer the 4.0L engine in the T4R to the Taco's 3.5L. The Taco is better for hauling dirty stuff, the T4R is better for hauling stuff you want to keep dry.

 

It has to do with the shape and size of the doors and roof. I think it is mostly due to the 4R seems to have a more vertical windshield and a pillar. Looking at them in pictures, it may not seem like much of a difference. But try and get into both side by side and you will notice the difference. The floor height is similar on both. The 4R looks a bit taller optically I think due to its black painted rocker panels on some trims. It's hard to explain, but very noticeable in person.

 

Fair enough, I was only thinking from a height standpoint. I'd love to have a grab handle on the driver's side.

 

Yes to this. The 4Runner has sightly more ground clearance than the Tacoma, although it's less than 1/4" so it's not much. Maybe if it has side steps and OP's Taco doesn't?

Shorter definitely makes a difference in maneuverability. They drive very similar, otherwise. However, the biggest difference I notice is the brake pedal. The Tacoma has the firmest brake pedal of any vehicle I've ever driven. I'd say the 4runner has a sightly softer than average pedal.

It comes down to personal preference. I prefer the Tacoma and my significant other prefers the 4Runner. However, she does prefer the interior feel of the Tacoma better.

 

Not at all. Worst engines and cars Toyota ever made all came out of Japan. Just facts.
