    [3RZ with 63K in a 2001 reg. cab 4x4 .]

    After a long road trip a month ago it started making what I would describe as an echoey pop corning sound when going from 1500 to 2200 RPMs – seems I cannot hear it above 2200 but maybe that is other engine noise drowning it out. Bunch of guys say it must be valves and that 3RZs have to have a valve adjustment every 50K... not so sure, my local Toyota expert doesn't support that opinion. But we'll have to see what he says after inspection. Any thoughts folks?

    Main thing is I'm debating a $3K lift kit from Toytec and don't want to install and then have the engine crap out on me.

    3rzs make a lot of noise. For me I would just check valves and that’s about it. Unless you hear noises from the front then it’s chain, tensile, or guides

    Under load? Is it spark knock? Maybe you put in low quality fuel during your road trip?

    exhaust leak at or near header possibly? would be more noticeable when you let of gas.

    OME lift, 4x sliders, Demello rear bumper, custom front bumper, Engo 9000lb winch
    3rz are definitely known for valves tightening up. I've checked mine twice in the last 5 years and needed to make a minor adjustment both times.

    Most likely an exhaust leak on the egr gasket.

    Thanks All. Gonna have to spend some time figuring out where the sound is coming from. I wouldn't really know if it's bad fuel, just Shell gas... was actually running some of that

    LiquiMoly Valve Clean during the trip and it seemed to help reduce the sound. Load is normal, driver and passenger... that's it.

    Was reading up on spark knock... pretty interesting. I changed the spark plugs a few thousand miles ago and interestingly enough, one of the spark plugs was pretty loose... perhaps loosened by over compressed cylinder?

    Idk if anyone has heard the Mp3 I made in neutral revving from 1000-1500-2000 RPM. If you play it with volume up loud you can really hear it at 0:50.

    I don't think I'm gonna worry too much... no loss of power and my mechanic will check it out in week.
