pulled and replaced a 4.0 in my truck with a used engine. Old engine was filled with green Preston’s universal coolant, the replacement unit has left over pink Toyota coolant. Would it be safe to refill the coolant system with new Toyota pink coolant and a little bit of green left over in the heater core? I also have a new radiator to install. Would it be safe to install this new radiator? Thanks guys!

It won’t hurt anything to mix, as long as none is dexcool. I’m not sure how Toyota pink is sold, premixed or you mix it with water. I’m a believer in using distilled water when mixing, less impurities, less deposits in the cooling system.

I would put every thing together, get it running and then fill with distilled water. Drive it around with the heater on for 10 miles, then completely drain the radiator and 2 block drains, refill with distilled water and do it again.
That should get it cleaned out pretty good.

Yup, good plan. When I replaced a radiator I flushed 5x with distilled. My dumass bought a champion radiator. BIG mistake. Lifetime warranty sure, if you enjoy replacing your radiator 4x in 3 years.

There is Aisin brand and Zerex Asian coolant pink that come pre mixed only.

Get that universal green outta the system and go with Toyota red or pink. Zerex Asian or Peak Asian both are good coolants. If you want to spring for it Toyota makes a 50/50 pre-mix, but it's spendy (to some, $30 for quality fluids is nothing to me).

PS, Dexcool is a good coolant in vehicles that take it. The badmouting comes from lack of maintenance or GM's famous leaky intake gaskets over the years. When exposed to air it does some funky stuff, but in a good sealed system is a good coolant.

I could be wrong but I think we need the OAT coolant. I should have specified earlier. I’m not sure if color designates what type it is. Pink, green, blue, orange, red, yellow, clear. So many choices.

Back when I read up on oat, hoat coolants I ended up deciding to use hoat for my Chevy. Newer coolant technology avoids electrolysis creation. It was on one of the major coolant company website, maybe zerex.

I should mention, I’m sure you already know to keep the pets away. Coolant tastes sweet, they’ll lap it up and get very sick and or die.

Correct, Toyota's and most Asian late models take an POAT. If you wanted to be different you could go with the Asian Blue, same thing, different color.

Ah nice, thanks. It’s been longer than I thought when I read up on coolant, 2014 or 15. Back then oat & hoat was the newest stuff.

At work, the factory started sending with dexcool, nobody said anything about it. We mistakenly mixed it with what we had, which turns it into cottage cheese. Now they use blue stuff they call supercool. upload_2021-3-28_12-26-35.jpg

Good reminder to all. Pets and wildlife love the taste of antifreeze/coolant. It is a hepatotoxic poison and will destroy their liver. They die a horrible death within a few hours of ingestion.

X2 - Great advice, I didn't do the block drains with distilled water when I did my first coolant change, using the green Prestone. I think mixing different coolants was the reason the gasket in my water pump failed prematurely. I would only ever use the HOAT (red) coolant from Zerex (made for Asian cars and less expensive) or the Toyota coolant and stay away from the green Prestone.
