    Hey guys

New to the forum. Hope you are all doing well.

I am kinda puzzled - first time ever with a truck and first time obviously for a Tacoma. I am trying to build one on the Toyota website and I don't know if their configurator is just terrible or if I am doing something wrong.

I want a basic Tacoma in Army Green, White or Cement ideally with 6ft cab and either 4x2 or 4x4 - I don't intend to offroad except maybe once or twice and lightly. I want the LED headlights but without the premium package nonsense like leather seats and jbl audio etc

Problem is, these options keep moving around depending on whether I pick a specific color, cab length, drivetrain and even engine size. It is infuriating trying to navigate the site. You pick a color you like and suddenly you have a Premium LED light package available. You add a cab length and that option is gone. Or you change 4x2 to 4x4 and it is replaced with another package half its price but only in a specific color (wind chill)

Am i doing something wrong or has Toyota made this as intentionally difficult as possible in order to force people to take the silly premium package or TRD pro?

I just want a construction work/weekend recreational truck that has LED lights and a nice color without all the extra crap! Why is this so difficult to do on the website

Certain options are only available as part of a package, not ala carte

the toyota website also won’t show every possible build config, it’ll try and match available inventory in your region

you can look at the brochure and it’ll show what’s part of packages vs one off options etc

This. You are picking from available inventory, and not actually configuring a custom truck.

I was able to get my 20 OR with minimal options and LED headlights. Only had to have the $700 technology package to add the LED option, which to me was well with it. I was fine with the tech package too because it added color matched bumper covers instead of the chrome.
LED headlights were a must for me.

I remember the same issue when i wanted to buy a tacoma, and when nothing was available from inventory on dealer lots, i was required to place an order for it. Like said toyota only offers certain trim, and technology packages for you taking. No cherry picking what you only want. I wasn't thrilled either i had to take some extra bs i didn't require, but the dealer explained to me thats how it works. At any rate its now been a year later, i've been very happy with the truck.

Like finding a perfect spouse. In order to get what you want (boobies) you gotta get the stuff you could do without.... like inlaws.

I started with the same exact desire as you:

    • Cement
    • DCLB
    • 4x4
    • base.

Thats a 7570 Tacoma. Toyota doesn't sell it in my region. No dealer will get it, as it isn't "allowed" Had to go states away to get it. But had a lot of fiasco AFTER I bought and paid for it.

    Ended up with a
    • Cement DCLB
    • 4x4
    • Loaded.
    7568

    LED is a must have.

Good luck. Here is my 60 day old truck.

    Hi all

Thanks all for the responses, very helpful

I contacted a Toyota dealership in Raleigh area about this and I've been told it's because I'm using Toyota National website to configure the vehicle and this has restrictions on it which are not present if ordering through Toyota South East. I've been told I can have any combination I like including a base TRD sport or Offroad with army green, white or cement and with just the Technology package and LED lights if I want to. They sent me an invoice showing the car specified in this way.So assuming this is all true and correct, can I lean on you guys for one more piece of advice please?

Given that I am unlikely to be off-roading (never done it before) or doing it very very lightly and that the truck is basically going to be used for my work (light construction, homebuilding) and holidays/vacations/road trips with possibly pulling some sort of trailer in the future (where we might sleep instead of booking hotels), what trim and options would be ideal for me?

    I am thinking:

    TRD Sport ($34,915)
    Army Green/Cement/White
    6ft Double Cab
    4x2 Drivetrain 3.5L V6
    Technology Pack ($800)
LED Headlights & Fog Lights ($485)
    BakFlip Tonneau Cover ($1,099)
    Ball Mount w/Trailer Ball ($109)
    Tread Running Board ($719)
    Bed Step ($399)

    Manu, Delv, Proc, Hndlg ($1,175)
    Total Before Discounts ($39,701)

Does this look like a good spec or should I add/change something?

I think the only two things I would add would be 4x4 and TRD black wheels/all terrain tires but I can't see any reason that justifies the additional $6.2k cost of these two options.

    Thank you

4wd is not critical.. until you get stuck and then it is worth every penny.
I live in SC now and still drive a 4wd because I have been stuck many times in my life. I don't hardly ever use it but when I need it it is there.

Every car manufacturer does this. Go build a new F150, or a Silverado.. all of them only offer certain packages, lights, colors etc with others. It's fitting to say you're puzzled because that's exactly what it is when building a new vehicle: a puzzle. You just have to pick your "can't-live-withouts" and everything else should follow. Usually that means the price increases which means you change your necessity list

Looks fine for whatever you want except I would make sure the running boards are the Predator Steps. I currently have the tube running boards and it's hardly an actual step

What kind of situation do you get stuck in? I can only imagine this must be serious offroading (which I have no intention of ever doing)

For sure, every car manufacturer is guilty of this. I think what threw me off with this one was the really bizarre circumstances where for example changing a color eliminated "tech package" but then popped up "Advanced tech package" or changing 4x2 to 4x4 meant only one color to be selected. I haven't seen that before and didnt seem to make commercial sense. Luckily Raleigh Toyota agreed and I *can* spec what I want without any of the other fluff like Premium pack etc

It can be as simple as turning around on a well groomed dirt forest service road and accidently dropping your rear end off the side into the soft ditch. If you don't plan to leave pavement or drive in snow/ice then 2wd would be unlikely to be a limitation.

    Thank you!

Can I just confirm, do you mean you have the "Side Rails" or the "Tread Running Boards"? The side rails look like there is hardly anything there but the side boards look quite wide actually so I would be surprised if those are the ones you are referring to

I actually have neither (see profile pic) but my running boards are similar to the "Tread Running Boards" and i'm recommending the "Side Rails" because the actual step goes down lower
