The IV wasn’t bad at lower speeds although I definitely had to open it up regularly to keep it from loading up, which I did. ;) I had to run an octane booster with the 10.75:1 compression ratio though.

    LOL... too fast for you?

The rocket engines were one of the best designs GM ever did. They didn't leak oil like a 389... and the only way a GTO could beat a 442 was to put a six-pack on.

Was that a one year problem? Or only some cars? My brother's car was great at highway speeds.

Not sure, between my dad and I and the GM reps we test drove over 40 cars and all of them exhibited the same issue. Id be willing to bet most people wouldnt know it was there without looking for it. But once we realized it it drove us nuts from there on out.

At least they were consistent. My '65 GTO is just a tempest with badging. Double whammy, the previous owner put a 455 out of a '75 Trans Am in it...6H heads...low compression...blech.

Yeah but it looks purdy. And it's not like you're out there dragging it anyway, so what would you do with an extra 100hp besides get into trouble?

Same could be said for first gen Mustangs, they were just Falcons underneath. Witness all the hot rod Falcons competing in Carrera Panamericana, etc. because the Mustang go fast bits bolt right on.

I had a 403 Rocket in my '79 Toronado. It was incredible, and never met a gas station it didn't like.

Yes but it became it’s own model from the Tempest and Lemans. Adding bigger more powerful motors to make it that way. Yours with a transplanted low compression 455 motor and badged as a GTO is the perfect cruiser in today’s world even though it’s not a real GTO. Having a real one today would play mind games on driving it knowing how rare they are now.

It's a real GTO. But the 64/65 GTOs were just rebadged LeMans.they didn't get a different body until '66.

My dad was a mechanic and paint and body man in the late 40s, 50s, and 60s, and a confirmed Pontiac man. His perception about GM, clear into the mid 80s, was that they experimented on Oldsmobile, and the did...OHV V-8, turbo-hydromatic transmission first came out from Olds; Chevys were cheap, Buick’s were for old men, and Cadillacs were for old, rich men. Pontiac’s were the sweet spot for him. When mom got a new car in 1984, he would only consider Pontiac for those very reasons, even though the LeMans they bought was virtually identical to what comparable models from Olds, Chevy, and Buick sold. I’ve always been a big Pontiac fan, so I guess in my case that the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree.

I knew that about the rebadging. I mis-read what you were saying as yours was a cloned GTO from a Lemans.

The '66/7 Lemans was the same body as the GTO as far as I know. Rebadging the Lemans was done to make GTOs every year they were built.
