Frame maintained

Hi has anyone used this spray on there frame to keep it looking new?

 

a lot of people use Fluid Film / Wool Wax. I've heard of people using ACF-50 and I know there are a few threads about it... google 'ACF-50 site:tacomaworld.com' and you'll get some discussion

 

Ive been fluid filming my frame since new in 2018, All my bolts and nuts and everything is crisp and clean looking still after 3 MN winters. My only problem with fluid film is that is washes off. I think this year I am going to go with woolwax (black) and the big spray gun.

 

Might catch some shit for this.. but I have heard of guys using.. bar and chain oil, used motor oil, and used auto trans fluid. Not very eco friendly but old timers claim it works.

 

I'm waiting for the timing chain cover leak and letting the engine spray oil all over the frame.

I spray 3M Body Cavity Wax on every year, it doesn't make your truck smell like a chemical factory and dries enough to not get all over you if you want to work on the truck.

 

Never used ACF-50 but have done the old used oil and dirt road method in the past with good results. For the taco I plan on getting a coat of NH Oil sprayed soon and resprayed before the winter season.

 

Most these rust inhibitors work ok, just depends how long they protect in adverse conditions. I used cosmoline rp-342 for the first time after doing my trucks with fluid film over every year. Definitely sold on the cosmoline...spayed it on one time last year, after going through a snowy, salty, wet, muddy winter... i took a good look over the weekend....for the first time i'm relieved i don't have to do that messy job again. Nothing washed away, still looks the same as last summer when done

 

Fluid film doesnt smell like a chemical factory... it smells like a pig farm...

here’s another option, similar to fluid film but dries to a light wax film. Doesn’t leave quite the mess for dust to stick to or wash off.

I used Woolwax sinc we are in the snowy mountains - and even if the Tahoe area takes it easy with the salt, they still use some sort of concoction on the roads. It does not smell beyond the time of spraying and it does becone a waxy coating.

I'll note that it does attract dirt forming a waxy barrier impenetrable to moisture. It will work allright. It will not wash off easily. I'll have to scrape it off (IF I wanted it off...)

ACF-50 is a penetrating corrosion inhibitor. It works well to get between layers and under fastener heads and nuts to break up anodic cells but it can also result in loosening of shear fasteners like rivets that can't be tightened easily. If you regularly check the torque on all the frame mounted fasteners, it wouldn't be a bad idea, but it won't last very long on outside exposed surfaces. Same goes for CorrosionX. I've used both extensively in Aviation

 

Stick to the fluid film. That concoction sounds better for cleaning dirty bolts.

 

I'll put in a good word for the Cosmoline RP342and CRC HD Corrosion inhibitor. I've used both and really can't tell the difference between the 2 in terms of finished application. I think they are basically both a cosmoline/wax based product. Lots of threads here about frame protection. Fluid Film is probably the most popular I've seen here on the forum and it is very readily available in local stores like auto parts stores. The Cosmoline and CRC I've found I have to order. My opinion is that they both work well and don't easily get displaced from where you spray them once they've setup.

 

Cosmoline does cost more, but once you use it, this stuff doesn't need to be bought, and reapplied every year. Fluid film is sold just about in every home improvement lowes stores, hardware stores, or any of the popular auto parts stores. I don't care what rust inhibitor you use, they all stink somewhat.

 

I use the black Cosmoline. Easier to see where you miss.

Oh and get a 3M tyvek suit, throw away gloves and goggles. It's a job.
