Wasn’t but a few minutes of filing for the nuts I used on my dome lights in the tent. I’m going to wait to file the others until I can get my hands on awning brackets

So far we have seen the salt flats, Haystack rock, crater lake, drove most of the Pacific Coast Highway, went through San Francisco across the Golden Gate bridge and grabbed some sourdough, went into Yosemite to see El Capitan, and hitting the Grand Canyon today. Not a bad trip so far.

Oh ya, and this camper? We’ll, it’s the highest quality, most throughly thought out, BA camper ever made. Sorry GFC, you have nothing on this. So glad I sold my GFC and got onboard the SP train.

 

Truck looks great! I've got my install date set for May 3rd. Will be heading up from Atlanta, GA. Hoping to map out a good adventure on the way back.

 

I finally installed my 8’ Roam awning. I used the the slits on top because I didn’t like how the bracket poked up above the awning since I’m not running a 270. I also added lock washers to their washer/bolt just to be cautious in case they back out from vibration.

 

Yes, a few times. You take some 2x2" pine and build a box around the inside of the hole you cut for the vent (14x14"), then upholster/carpet the box. It sits inside the roof and the screws from the outside flange of the vent screw through the roof and in to the box, sandwiching the roof between flange outside and 2x2" box inside. Your inner trim ring then screws to the box from the inside. It takes two people (one in, one out) to hold this all together but once a couple screws are in you're good.

Looks great! I went with 8ft ARB awning. Paid for brackets this morning, hopefully I'll have them next week.

T-Nuts will hopefully be here next week too.

 

Hey @mac_2_nite, I edited my post above. Long day yesterday. It's actually 2x2 you need to use for a flange box on a roof vent. They sell it in 4' sticks usually at Home Depot/Lowe's or you can rip a 2x4 in half.

The MAXXFAN® Mini MODELS 4301M and 4401M models work with roofs that are 1" thick minimum.
Don't devolve the design of these modern campers by cutting up 2x2's and using that... and introduce a material that rots, swells, etc.

 

Thanks! Yeah ARB was my original choice but nobody has the black aluminum one in stock right now and the shop near me had this in stock lol! What are you going to do with the T-nuts? The SP brackets should come with their own version. Unless you’re planning on using it for something else.

 

I found the ARB in stock on Amazon. Not sure what color it is lol. But I wanted 8x8 ft and this was the only one I could find in stock.

Yeah the Tnutz are for the fridge mount/storage cabinet/stealth sleeping platform I'm going to install.

 

Yeah I wanted the new aluminum housing not the original pvc housing. Can’t wait to see your bed setup. I plan to do the same but need ideas lol

 

Well here's the quick view.

Goals for my setup are mountain bike/camping trips. Need to be able to carry a moto on a hitch rack with MTB inside, and have a sleeping platform in the bed for stealth camping purposes.

The cabinet will take up passenger side and also along the cab partway across. Fridge will have a platform by the tailgate. I was going to put a slide there but will try it first fixed. I think it will be easy enough to access without a slide. I'm going to mount it so it will be flush with the lid I put on the main section of cabinet. That whole length will become a sleeping platform when I need to stealth camp.

Bike will lean against the driver side wall with back wheel against the cabinet.

Lots of compromises with this setup but it if meets the goals above I'm good with that. I'll modify as needed.

I spent a ton of time going through the Vagabond thread for ideas, but ultimately you have to consider what your needs/priorities are and what design will meet those first.

 

Sub'd. Hoping to get into one of these and get our order in ASAP. Even after the months of research, and lists, comparisons and reviewing photos and videos.. I would still love to check one out in person before commiting. We have some big plans for this setup and even our house (putting in an RV gate and building a covered carport in the backyard since the truck won't fit in the garage anymore). We think the X1 is what we need and want though and are super excited about it all!

 

Also, can anybody share a picture or good explanation of the gap issue on the 2nd gen I read about?

 

Essentially, you have to run OEM bedrail caps or the camper will not fit. There's an inside flange that keeps the camper registered on the bed and if you run aftermarket caps it lowers the height of the bedrail and that flange will interfere with the bed tie-down t-channels.

I think it's more just because the bed caps are different heights between generations, which ultimately translates to the difference. - but sure, that correlates to a difference in depth.

 

Yeah I followed you. It just made me remember the overall bed depth is different and that's probably where it is.
