So have gone back and forth with my dealer on this and they won't budge on their initial offer.

I have a white 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 Premium with 29,700kms (18500 miles). Fairly clean overall, have the TRD pro grille, bed mat, chrome tip exhaust so ~$600 in accessories and BFG K02s with less than 5000 miles on them.

My lease buyout is ~27K CAD or $21500 USD. They are offering me $36K CAD on trade, or $28700 USD.

For a truck with my miles $36K CAD seems low. Similarly spec'd Tacomas with way more (sometime double) miles are being listed for $46-$48K all day in my area.

I'm taking it to a different dealer tomorrow but want to get some opinions on what I should aim for, realistically to get for my truck.

    Trade in =/= sales price

they buy it from you for 36, list it for 46, sell it for 40.

lol knowing these guys there's no way they'll negotiate down from 46K to 40K on a used sale.

They will list for 48K and sell for min 45K. 9K is way too much margin, I understand they need to make a profit but they can't be shaking out my pockets.

OP, I can't pretend to know what the market for used Tacomas happens to be in Ottawa. I haven't been up to Canada for about a year now with the border closed. Argh!

In any case, look at this article. Prices for used Toyotas are getting pretty close to new. Not sure how that plays out in ON, but this may help your case:

"According to iSeeCars, the Tacoma is among the most expensive vehicles to buy used vs. new, with just a 4.2% difference in price, or $1,557."

    Link:
    https://www.carsdirect.com/deals-articles/used-toyota-tacoma-prices-are-still-crazy-expensive

I am curious why the trade in now? I would need to think more about it but maybe I just keep what I have and do the payout. Seems like a good value when you look at the broader market.

You will never get a market price from a dealer. The only way is to sell it yourself. Been there done that many times.

Want to get into a 4Runner, that's the only reason I'm even giving these guys the time of day.

I get it, the house always wins, I fully recognize that. But they are already going to get me close to MSRP on the T4R...they can't be fleecing me on my trade on top of that.

Selling a lease myself seems complicated. I'd make way more money but I'd also need to deal with private buyers, tire kickers, the whole song and dance.

They don't care about the accessories you added and as long as the tires on the vehicle have decent tread they don't care about the BFG's either. Now, they probably will care about them when they go to sell it but thats the way auto sales work. I hate buying cars!

Dealerships will ALWAYS try to fleece you on your trade, that’s a cash cow for dealerships. When I worked at a dealership the sale guys always made more money selling a used car over new.

well I told them, in that case when my 4Runner comes in please swap the tires so I can keep my K02s...lots of "ums" and "ahs" "well they may not fit". Had to tell them "don't worry, they'll fit". They want the tires, they just want them for free lol.

Last time I looked at Tony Graham's inventory (big Toyota dealer in Ottawa) they had 1 new Tacoma in stock and none used. I would hold out for more or figure out how to do a private sale (I've never leased, don't know the mechanics)

For sure but I same in with a "let's make a deal, no BS" upfront, but getting the BS anyway.

I showed them the half dozen comparable listings and prices and they said "anyone can ask whatever they want, doesn't mean it will sell". Yeah, because they are the only dealer who knows the value of my truck, everyone else is $8K off lol why can't these transactions just be transparent and easy.

My truck wasn't a lease but I traded my 17 off road with 58k miles for 28,500usd. I was fully ready to walk away but the deal/ convenience was too good to pass up. I traded for a cummins 2500 and I see my old truck all the time around town. I always feel awkward when I see it! I loved that truck!

Well they kept beating me over the head with "there is ridiculous demand for the 4Runner, we can't deal". Well two can play that game, there is also ridiculous demand for gently used Tacomas.

I’d get a quote with the other dealerships near by. We got our preferred dealer come up $1500 American to match an offer from an dealership 45 minutes away rather then lose the business. I got an offer online using KBB and Carvana.

The money is made on the trade in. That said I would never add anything to a lease. When I traded my 19 in they came to me. I had some steps I left on and a tonul cover. Both 5 yrs old rusty and bent and flopping in the wind I did keep the grill guard. The lease keeps them in control because on an end date.

Sell it private party. Just drive around with a "For Sale" sign posted in your car until somebody offers to buy it from you (you will get offers) and then go buy a truck with all the extra cash you kept from going to the dealer.

Oh boy. Lots to unpack here, but chances are they aren't "fleecing" you on your trade. As I understand it, the Taco is under lease currently? That could complicate things somewhat. Either way, as someone said earlier, they don't care at all about your accessories or tires, so forget about that. If you take a look at any "what's my car worth" website resource, you're in the general ballpark of what to expect for trade in. Go to CarMax or another dealer and get a buy bid to get another quote. I'd bet it's close.

Understand that they are buying your vehicle for wholesale value and nothing more. It has nothing to do with what was mentioned earlier about "there quoting me near MSRP on the 4Runner..." or however you said it. Mostly irrelevant. That's a whole separate transaction. What you get in return is, as you said, the easy exit without tire kickers and private sale hassle. There's value there for many people. The dealer is also taking a risk though too. Is there hidden damage? Will it blow up 5 minutes after buying it from you? Basically, dealers offer you wholesale on "trade" to limit their losses in case they find that they bought a problem...worst case scenario, they can punt it along at auction with reasonably certainty that they won't lose their shirt.

Yes and no. Mostly No... First, they want a quick deal. In and out...Toyota sales is a volume game. What you're asking for is a hassle that requires the salesman to get approval from his manager, then someone else (likely the GM) who will then have to coordinate with service and PAY THEM to swap 8 tires on two vehicles. Generally, sales and service departments are two wholly separate business units under the dealer umbrella. You may think they're all the same, but they aren't. As odd as that sounds, if sales wants service to do something (excluding warranty or new vehicle prep) they have to pay service to take care of it.
