Brought the truck in for its 5k free service, all the dealer did to my knowledge was a tire rotation. i asked about an oil change and was told the oil is changed every 10k. Have I had smoke blown up my ass. As a retired auto mechanic, I recall the break in oil should be changed at 5k or less. Any feed back is appreciated.

It is your truck. You should have the oil changed at whatever intervals you prefer. I personally go with 5000 mile intervals. Toyota does recommend every 10000 miles though.

I would at least change it after the first 5k because of the new engine wear. After that it's up to you.

People have hard time with change and new technology. But it's your money. If you want to pay the extra, do it.

rule o thumb driled down upon a direct result

gm engines did NOT have oil filters

gulf purported to have best post war oil was ......straight weights

clearances far greater than tight tolerances today

filters when finally used are much better today than 10 years ago

U could cut the filter open careful NOT to infer shavings ...........mostly to find nothing

the oil is not worn out or fouled

My truck never returned to the dealership after I bought it. And I don't plan on ever unless it's a Toyota recall. I'm not sure if the dealership still gets paid if I don't ever use that 2-year free maintenance.

I changed the break-in oil myself after 1k miles
I did notice shiny bits in the filter, nothing alarming.

I then changed the oil again at 5k. Oil was still in very decent shape. But I'm still sticking with 5k oil change interval. My other direct injection vehicle after 5k miles the oil is stinky and pure black with all the soot from direct injection. I'm guessing the D4-S engine doesn't go to direct injection that often with the way I drive it.

For my up-coming 10k oil change, I will mod it with Baxter and put a GIGANTIC filter. I haven't measured the exact, but I'll find whatever biggest filter that fits above the TRD Pro skid plate.
The reason for bigger filter is so that I don't have go by 5k miles or 6 months. I can safely leave the filter on past 6 months and only do oil change whenever I see 5k miles interval, much easier to track.

Toyota’s 24 month service that comes with the vehicle is 5k tire rotation, 10k oil and tire. You can opt to use your 10k at 5k to get the oil change for free but that will put you off schedule as your next visit at 10k miles will not include the oil change.

I leased for 27 months and I know I’ll never meet the miles so I’ve moved up the service as I know I will not use my last visit if you will. Heck, at this rate, maybe not the last two visits.

I do think it’s ironic though that they still put a sticker on the windshield to get your oil changed in 3k miles.
