At the end of the day, the top end chips are going to be pushed to the limits. They aren't bought as show pieces by most. That means Bios limiters off, and damn the torpedos for most users. Under those conditions, the 11900K turns into Chernobyl while the 5950X with double the cores runs at 2/3rds the power. Oh, and the 5950X will still win most of the time both in actual programs and in games.

Looks to have 5th gen Intel CPU. I know 4th gen can't use RAM sticks over 8GB. I know 6th gen can. I'm not sure about 5th though.

Damn, I did not know that. I really appreciate the info, I'm wanting to see how star citizen plays on it but need a little more ram.

Looks like you can do up to 2 x 8GB of RAM, but not a single 16GB stick.

TLDR at the bottom for those who don't care...

For the first time in my life I caved and bought a prebuilt. (hiss, boo, I know, I know). But it was the only way to actually source parts for a reasonable price.

    For some backround:
My brother and I have always built our own desktop PC's, however he definitely games more than I do. My last built PC was in 2012/2013 time frame and at the time it was for WoW and GW2. Once the GPU started to get long in the tooth I transitioned over to console (PS4 then, PS5 now). However the PCs current use has been relegated to internet/light work. However everything is now slowly dying on it, mainly the NIC's are the most aggravating. I could band aid this, but would rather just upgrade everything.

    Old PC Specs:
    i5-3750 @3.40 GHz
    8.0GB DDR3
    GTX460
    256 SSD

So I've been keeping an eye on the GPU market and am just flabbergast by the insane prices and availability. This is to include the older generation models. I tend to follow the philosophy of "buy once, cry once" and to inflation proof my equipment. Especially technology/hardware. This led me down the rabbit hole of a decent prebuilt knowing I don't care too much about min/maxing, overclocking, and doing anything too taxing on a system.

    New PC Specs:
    Dell XPS 8940 SE
    i7-10700k @ 3.8-5.1GHz
    32GB (2x16GB) DDR4
    RTX3070
    1TB PCl3 NVMe SSD + 2TB HDD

I settled on the Dell because the components seem pretty solid (FU proprietary PSU/MOBO), the case is relatively unassuming (I'm 35, RGB is too flashy for me), and the price seems pretty reasonable. This setup seems to inflation proof me for a few years and will allow me to run the latest games, of which I haven't played on a PC in almost a decade.

This brings me to my long winded wind up to my question:
My current monitor is now the weak link. What's a good 24-27" 144Hz that can take advantage of my new found power? Looking for something around the $500 price point. My brother pointed me to the LG 27GL85-B, however he hasn't kept up on it since his last refresh to a 2080ti in 2019. Is this still the most reasonable monitor for my needs?
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TD94TQF/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

    TLDR:
Finally upgraded my PC from 2012/13 to include an RTX3070. Need a new 24-27" 144Hz monitor for $500 or less. Any recommendations?

Nothing wrong with buying a prebuilt right now. With the silly prices and availability on everything its the only solid way to get some stuff (especially at decent prices)

Nothing wrong with a prebuilt, especially right now. This is what I'm running and am very happy with it: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XT6WQCJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8 (Only a used one for sale on Amazon but I'm sure Newegg or b and h would have it in stock.

^This. I told a buddy of my to grab an Origin PC system for the same reason.

Keep an eye on that PC though. Unfortunately the XPS desktops max out at 500 watt PSUs IIRC. That's going to fall short on the CPU/GPU you purchased. I'm sure Dell likely built something into the MB Bios to lower the CPU TDP under such loads but, still, keep an eye on it.

The two killer monitors at just over that price right now are the 27" 4K LG 950 and the 27" Samsung G7. The LG is a flat panel 4K 144hz and the Samsung G7 is curved 1440p 240 Hz panel. The LG is IPS and the Samsung is VA, though it is worth mentioning that the VA in the Samsung is Qdot with some fancy new tech that actually outperforms the IPS in reducing l Pixel smearing. I have the 32" G7.

I've read up on the proprietary 500W PSU from dell paired with its proprietary MOBO. I almost downgraded to a 3060ti for that very reason. But decided the extra $180 for a 3070 was worth it. Worse case scenario is that I would buy a new MOBO/Case and reuse my relatively new (<2 years) 650W PSU in my current PC.

I thought the 500W PSU was adequate for the 3070? I know once you get to the 3080 and 3090 is when it starts falling flat on its face.

I'll look those up. I have 3 weeks until the Dell arrives as I just placed the order last night.

I would settle for a RTX 3080 at MSRP

TBH that's a highly specialized rig. The 4x Quadro makes no sense unless you're doing some crazy level 3D simulations or AI work. Even then, you're hitting the point where an nVidia A1 might be a better option.

I had someone I know offer me MSRP plus $200 on my three year old 2080Ti. I would give it up but it's not mine to give up.
