Having a noticeable turning problem on my '05, after replacing the rack&pinion (OE, was leaking around boot on drivers side). As long as I'm on the straight &narrow, I'm fine, but as I'm turning in either direction, I feel a bit of resistance. Any suggestions, as to what I should look at next ? Would certainly appreciate some good input, as I'm not mechanically inclined, but, don't hesitate to get in and do my part with a little help from someone who is.

Did you have the alignment checked after you did it?

Did you replace all the mounting hardware & bushings? Verify everything is torqued to spec? Sounds to me like the rack could be moving a bit.

OP, was the same issue there prior to replacement of the rack? Was the rack a new OEM or aftermarket? Was the ujoint on the lower steering intermediate shaft inspected?

I replaced the old rack with a "refurbished" from Rock Auto. We used everything that was in the box. After first replacing, I had a problem with it clicking as I locked the wheels left or right. but then found that the rack was a bit loose,so we re-tightened. which solved that problem. System was thoroughly bled as well, but still having the fore mentioned problem when turning.

I wonder if maybe the rack is a tad bent.

That is what I was also thinking. Esp considering the age 2005.

    1. Try placing a very slight preload in an axial direction, either compressing or extending, at the coupling yoke where the two shafts meet and then tighten the 12mm (wrench size) yoke bolt(s). Not talking much here, but slight. An assistant can make it easier.

    2. With the steering wheel centered, check the free play in the rack guide adjustment. Both my Tacos developed looseness and clunk there rather quickly.
Also, the factory spec. for maximum back-and-forth play for a centered steering wheel as measured at the rim of the SW is 30mm. Common sources of excessive play are inner/outer tie rod ends, rack guide, ball joints, worn out bushings in the UCA/LCA, ujoint in the lower steering intermediate shaft.
