H4, because L4 power will want to spin the tires (unless you have A-TRAC).
You don't need power in sand, you need floatation.
If the tires begin to spin, let air out of them (to 15 psi average), do not dig in.
L4 is just too slow with too much power for sand. Only use it to allow the Crawl Control or A-TRAC to creep you out of a stuck. Then go to H4 after you let more air out of the tires.

See my how to sand drive on a beach post:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/baja-beach-4wd-32-psi-to-15-psi-see-the-difference.104202/

This beast with front and rear lockers in low range was stuck... Until I convinced him to let more AIR OUT of his tires!

He was so happy when he achieved floatation (and didn't go out with the incoming tide)!

With enough air removed, even a 2WD can beach drive... it is just not as easy and with air below 20 psi, do not drive too fast, brake suddenly, or turn sharply!

Air down when you hit the sand. Not when it's too late!

4lo is fine in the sand just don't gun it otherwise you will dig down. I say 4lo because if you ever watched trans temps (auto) in 4hi even with tires deflated you would quickly switch to 4lo to make it easier on the engine and trans.

It's even more amazing when people "under think". We see it daily on You Tube with epic failure videos.
