    9DA63AE2-B759-43A6-B6F2-780E932B2E40.jpgLike the title says, 65 mph truck shut off and coasted to a stop on the freeway. Checked the fuses, swapped around the relays, had it towed home and put 5 gallons of fuel in. Code reader pulls up the same codes as before for the EVAP canister nothing new. I don’t hear a fuel pump turning on. I was cranking on it and when I was done out of frustration I pumped the gas pedal and heard a crunchy metal on metal sound up front of the engine and a buzzing sound I got out and unplugged the throttle body and the buzzing stopped. I had my kid hop in and recreate the starting and gas petal pumping and determined the crunchy noise was coming from the throttle body.... probably has nothing to do with what’s going on but though I would mention it. I’m thinking it’s the fuel pump, my EVAP has been on the fritz for a month throwing the 5 codes of death for the EVAP off and on but nothing else. The truck did try to start for a few seconds before the tow truck showed up but would die around 600rpm like it was out of fuel and ran on fumes. My starting fluid can was dead so I couldn’t spray in it yet to see if it would try to run. It’s never missed a beat or had a hiccup in 186k miles. I’ll dig more into it tomorrow after work.

    My first thought is fuel pump but with the codes you are getting there could be more involved. My '06 did this many years ago. I was in the fast lane on 635 here in Dallas when it suddenly lost power. I started coasting, hit my emergencies and then when it was around 30 mph I was suddenly able to accelerate again. I took it in under warranty and they could find nothing wrong. No codes. To this day the truck has never done it again and never thrown a code.

    Put a new fuel pump in tonight. Fired up CEL went away too. So far so good. Figured I would give a report. After reading that other 65 and died thread I thought might be heading down the same path. Fingers crossed I’m good to go.

    @Shadowhunter how many miles you have on your truck?

    Having a 2013 myself.... and having started gathering parts for a fuel pump swap i might do this sooner than later :anonymous:

    Food for thought:

    I had a similar issue in my old Mustang. It was likely caused by the ice storm I was driving in, but still. A master fuse had blown which activated my security system somehow which then cut off the fuel pump. I had to be towed to a shop in the middle of the night, but the fuel pump didn't need to be replaced.

    Hopefully the new fuel pump was all that OP needed!

    @Shadowhunter

    I too would like to know the mileage on your truck and were there any prior symptoms?

    I'm starting to wonder if it would not be a good idea to have a spare pump and associated parts on hand.

    Started popping codes for the EVAP system. I kept disconnecting the battery to clear them last week so I could work on it over the weekend. When everything was pointing towards the EVAP system canister that really doesn’t have anything to effect it to put it in limp mode I was going to have it turned off with the HP tuner and say fuck it.

    Did you make a mental note of how much junk had accumulated around the pump's "sock"?

    I didn’t crack it open yet to look. I’ll mess with it tonight when I get home. I was pushing to get the truck back up and running. I’ll take it apart and snap a pic tonight.

    I had a 2018 Rav 4 with a similar issue. It would cut off at speed. It threw a code for a purge valve that was stuck open. Since it was under warranty, I sent it to the dealership. They reflashed the computer. 300 miles later it happened again. The engine died at 45mph. Dealership contacted a Toyota rep and they could not figure it out. Soooooo....I just traded it for another Tacoma!

    The results are in... a 185k mile filter from a truck that gets 15-17 mpgs so what maybe 11.5k gallons of fuel filtered. This is very surprising.... drum roll please :pccoffee: :rockband: :worthless:

    What did you buy for the replacement. Looking at doing mine as preventative maintenance, my mileage is getting up there.

    BF479DBB-D4FD-4A8A-9F90-5EBDBC3CCC15.jpg This, no special reason I went with it other than it was the only one that was in stock in a 80 mile radius. Toyota wanted $510 for theirs that was two days out and has a one year warranty. This one was $377 and a lifetime warranty.

    Oof. Yeah thats dirty but i bet it still flowed. That stated it probably was straining the pump and killed it. Ill end up spending the extra $ to grab a URD upgrade kit so i have an external fuel filter.
