Secondary Air Injection Pump is being replaced on my 2009

I'd heard/read that the 2012's were getting free repairs for this type of issue. I did not receive a letter about anything like this, so I assumed it did not apply to my 2009. (I probably should have posted BEFORE taking it to a shop)

The shop had already removed the pump for diagnostic purposes, when I received the call for the estimate. He said that the OEM part would start at $1400, NOT including labor. So he recommended a kit, and said they would have to rewire things. Total estimate was $677 (parts 355.93, labor 251.20, plus taxes and fees?)

I know I'm doing things a bit backwards, but as a widow, I would just really like to know whether I should continue doing business with this shop. A neighbor recommended them highly, and I can walk there I asked to get the old part back, because that has been standard advice for those of us who don't know much else. He said that he would show it to me, and explain everything, but that it has a core, so they need to return it

Just looking for input about the estimate, as well as whether I should have contacted Toyota first, to see if my 2009 was included in the repair offer

 

I'll bet that your truck is a 4 cylinder 2TR-FE engine that had the pump. The 6 cylinder engine didn't get these pumps until the 2012 year model and those are the ones that were on the service campaign you asking about. The 2009 model year 6 cylinder doesn't have a Secondary Air Injection Pump.

 

I do have a 4-cylinder

 

There is no service campaign or recall for the 2TR-FE, 4 cylinder Secondary Air Injection Pump system that I am aware of.

 

Any engine codes? What were the symptoms for needing a mechanic and how many miles on the vehicle?

The engine light/codes are the reason I took it into the shop. O'Reilly's gave me printouts for P2441 and P0418. The shop said there were three. I did not ask about the third one.

I think that my mileage is just over 120K now.

After reading your post I decided to check the OEM part number and see if there might be any lower cost alternatives.

Now consider that I know absolutely nothing about the quality of the parts linked below, they are almost certainly Chinese, but I have been inside the OEM Toyota air pump and it is not very complicated or worth very much at all IMHO. FWIW, seems like someone on the forum here also report finding a made in China marking on one of their pumps.

The current Toyota part number is: 17600-0C020

With a couple linked as follows the reviews are encouraging. Actually, it would not surprise me if all the aftermarket pumps in a similar price range were made in the same factory.

i have one of those $90 chinese pumps in my truck. it has been working fine for over 2 years. i did have to swap the wiring harness from the oem to the ebay chinese pump. if it fails, i'll buy another chinese one.

 

I so appreciate this information and research. I will try to find someone who in the future would be open to allowing me to buy my own part.

 

Talk to your local Fire Chief and ask him who he gets to work on his vehicle

 

I picked up the truck today.

He showed me how the bad part has a sort of a fan, that he said is supposed to turn smoothly. But instead, when he turned it (it's like a little white wheel, that LOOKS like some kind of plastic), the turn was sort of "bumpy" and not smooth

I learned that there are a lot of people that I know in my condo complex who go there. One walked in while I was there. It is convenient to walk, instead of having to find a ride, but for the $40+ in mystery "shop supplies", I could get an Uber next time, to try out another place that is recommended highly on Nextdoor.com. I'll have to decide when the time comes.

It sounds to me like the mechanic is legit. Took the time to show/explain how the part worked and showed you the issue.

Price might be the issue here, but I wonder how much time he had to spend testing... Many good mechanics here, and experienced amateurs. Makes it feel like, "If it was so obvious, why did It rake so long to find the issue? Why the high bill?"

My suggestion is to continue using the shop, but maybe do some of the leg work (ask here for info on codes, suggestions options) to help your mechanic get a starting point. If you feel the bill to high again, start looking for someone else.
